What is your opinion on rock-a-rokie? (Karaoke with a band backing) I have seen this done a few times, and I really enjoyed it, I think that for the cost of this many places have chosen not to do it. I actually think its a great idea, and would love to see more of it, but where would you find such a venue that is long term? Open for discussion, or opinions. |

I can’t see this taking off with the general public. Singing with a band is more difficult than singing karaoke. Most bands have 1 or 2 members that do the singing, I can’t see them sharing the spotlight with amateurs. |

We do it very often. We start the night with soft music from CD, then we have karaoke, then the Band comes in. They will do their own stuff. After that it is an open mic event with the band providing the backing. When the band takes a break, normal karaoke will start again. This kind of event are normally held in the open or in a large hall. A crowd of 1000 plus is not uncommon. The line of singers wanting to sing is very very long. And I almost forget to say that those singers PAY to sing. Or someone will pay to let their favorite singers sing. |

I know a place here in my area, that offers it on Monday. I personally have never been there (I have a show the same night), but of course my regulars checked it out and one of my good friends (and good singers) is promoting/working for/with the venue. From what I hear, the concept itself is pretty good and first timers like it to get up there and sing with the band (good band also). The problem with it though is the song selection. The band has about a 100 songs to choose from, period. So automatically, you'll hear the same songs over and over again. It worked out for about 8 weeks, now the place is dead. And that's with switching the band in between, to get a change in songs in the show. |

For a few years we had jam sunday In the aft where band and non band members would bring their guitar etc in and jam with karaoke singers. It is a lower volume laid back atmosphere and easier to record live. There was no charge to the bar just some people getting together and doing what they enjoy and appreciating others' talents. Also kids could participate. |

A local tribal casino has had this type of thing going for a few years now but it apparently has run its course because attendance has dropped. I went to see it when it first started, and typical of a guy band there wasn't much for a woman to sing. They were using backing tracks as well to complement their instruments. A lot of people will get a thrill out of singing in front of a band. Many will say, "I just couldn't hear myself!" Or "They did a different version!" - Well it is a band playing and they will often spin the music to their own style or interpretation. Takes a good band to carry it off, and one willing to learn music for female singers, besides a few Janis Joplin and Pat Benatar tunes. k |

In short: I love live band karaoke very very very very very very very very very very very VERY much! We need more of it! :hi5: :dancin: I do know what you mean about not having enough "chick songs" (as one woman called them). Once I was going to sing "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac, and someone else beat me to it. But for me to sing a song, it doesn't have to be a chick song--THIS chick just has to be able to make it work. I may change a few words or a few high or low notes here & there. But I often will sing a song in my head first, just to try and figure out if it will work for me. |

Cool! My kid (age 10) isn't big on singing by himself in public (although he has a nice voice), but it sure would be nice if I could bring him along just to listen. We're having a trivia and karaoke night at church Fri. so I will probably go and bring my son along. The last time they had a karaoke night, I brought him, and although he didn't sing, one of his friends was there and they played together. I must admit, even though I'm pretty good at trivia, I wish the one on Fri. night was all karaoke. I'd rather be singing! |

I really did like the whole thing, I am impressed with it. And just the fact that people are able to get up on stage with a band, is many peoples ambitions anyways. It fullfills something. But I think its great, I have people that ask about stuff like that all the time. hee hee, well it seems like a lot of fun |
