This sort of goes with the thread about "divas", although I don't know if the people in question were _deliberately_ trying to be divas: The other night I was sitting at the bar at a karaoke place. The kj played a few songs worth of filler music, and during that part, 3 or 4 people across the bar started singing, very loudly, totally different songs than what was being played. Now here's the REAL rub: when it was time for karaoke again and a guy got up to sing, these folks at the bar were _still_ singing "Natural Woman" at the top of their lungs! The guy on stage is singing "1 Bourbon, 1 Scotch & 1 Beer", and all I can hear is "YOU MAKE ME FEEL...YOUUUUUUUU MAKE ME FEEL..." from the people on the other side of the bar! It drove me nuts! HEY FOLKS, THERE'S SOMEONE ON STAGE TRYING TO SING HERE! (I didn't say that, but I felt like it.) Singing along with the person onstage is one thing--but singing a totally different song?!?!? And at the top of your lungs?!?!? I moved to the other side of the room so I could hear the onstage singers better (eventually the people at the bar shut up), and I was talking to a lady that used to be a kj there. She said people do that sometimes--mostly if they find a song in the book and are trying to remember how it goes, or demonstrate to someone how it goes. Well, DO THEY HAVE TO BE SO FRIGGIN' LOUD???????? (Fortunately, they didn't do this during any of my songs.) Have you guys ever seen people do this? |

Tonight, in fact, the same thing happened at my show. There was a guy (drunk as h$ll) singing the previous song while the next singer was singing, three songs in a row. I got a little annoyed and told him that I disapproved of his actions. He said he was sorry and stopped. It's up to the KJ to let people know what is acceptable behavior at their show, in a nice way, of course. |

It's happened on occasion, I just walk over & tell them to keep it low. |

Thing is, though, I'm not a kj! I don't even know if the kj heard these people who were doing this. |

One of the things about a bar is, people get drunk and stupid sometimes. In a case like this, I would have put the song they were singing on and motioned them to the stage. If they really wanted to sing they would come up, if they didn't you'd be surprised at how fast they will shut-up. |

Ohhhh, I admire all you kj's for knowing how to deal with all the idiots out there! I wouldn't be able to do it in a million years! I go there mostly to sing, and usually I'll have a drink (usually just 1). I don't need to get drunk--I'm crazy enough when I'm NOT drunk. |

Boozers are Losers. Sober people don't like to be around drunk people and drunk people don't like to be around sober people. I like to get along with everybody but to much Liquor changes peoples behaviors to much. |

It only takes one jerk to ruin an evening of fun. |

I only had that happen once. They started up just as the singer was ending their song. It was very distracting and i felt horrible for the singer. Out of fear for the next singer I decided not to start the next song up and join in with them over the mic. The whole bar started singing along. I was hoping to bring attention to the fact they were being loud enough to be distracting. It worked like a charm. It didn't happen again. |

If you have the song they are singing (shouting) you could cue it up and give them a microphone. Sing it or shut up. |

Indeed, they do... but there are limits. If a patron interferes with another singer at my shows, there are two sets of consequences: -- If the patron is in the rotation to sing, they're done for the night. End of story. -- If the patron is not in the rotation, I have the bouncer or bartender inform the patron that their behavior isn't acceptable and that they will be removed if it continues. Basically, I have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for drunks. If you want to be drunk and make an (@$%!) of yourself, that's fine. You'll get your time in the spotlight if you're in the rotation... but don't upstage or ruin things for other singers who are actually trying to enjoy themselves legitimately. |

That's weird that we both observed that happening the same week! Full moon? |

I find if you give a little feedback thru the speakers the loud shriek  makes them stop singing and quiets the room really quick. You can always "apologize" to the room. |
