What I assumed to be a type of hybrid acrobatics/tumbling/stunt-work/martial arts is called "Parkour".  I'm reading a little about this amazing stuff... Just fascinates me I suppose

Jackie Chan "missed" tho.. Almost died.   But yep,  seems about right Jerry.  He did similar type stunts however didn't he building jump down into awnings knowing that awnings absorb impact ?   He was amazing !  I enjoy his movies. Brilliant man.

If my memory serves me correct, Parkour was a technique developed in France by kids bored and was looking for something thrilling to do. I think some of these people were featured on the last James Bond movie, in the chase scene. I find it fascinating also since I can't do any of the stuff.

Extreme acrobatics ??  Copoeira Martial arts derivation ?  Dunno

Yes Eben, It's my understanding that Parkour was in fact French and has something to do with a guy named David Belle (guy in OP)

I think this is a derivation of something called Copoeira Martial Arts founded in Brazil that combines Martial arts with games and dance movement.  Not sure about that, I know NOTHING about it.  There a place here in CT that teaches it, and assuming I were suicidal I'd go :)  Some things just can't be started when in the 50's...LOL..  (Sounds like a fancy name for garish or flamboyant gymnastics, and considering I recently tore my knee peddling a bicycle probably best I avoid this stuff)

But I don't believe it really differs from "stunt" artists such as Ferdinand (forgot last name)  Slamartists dot com..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcO-pDwzgmk

(the guy doing the gainer into a pile of boxes off of 115 foot cliff)- It seems that basically ALL these folks have tumbling, gymnastics, and martial arts and acting training (not to mention a physically agility that FEW to none of us have, and the mindset to enable them to do dare-devilish feats)

This is the same type stuff stuntmen are doing during chase scenes, and fight scenes and I believe this guy and his buddies were in the James Bond movies.

I'm curious how traditional martial artists view this area.  Seems the mindset of those that participate in such activities have a similar mindset to what little I know of the Martial arts, and in it's most reckless form "street kids" flirt with this stuff, yet those that study it and understand their body and it's limitations (David Belle) (Ferdinand Fischer) seem to have a fair understanding that they ARE in fact mortal, and I'm sure they value their lives, but opt to test the limitations of common human existance ?

Here's the type of stuff I find interesting tho, and it excedes my physics ability. Most bodies of water have a surface that when impacted from what height (by a free-falling accelerating human body) has properties upon impact that are the same as hitting cement ?  90 feet ?
So jumping into a 20 foot pile of boxes I assume is much safer at slowing down the acceleration of a free falling person if stacked properly and landed on correctly.

Skiiers do this type thing into powder too from higher surfaces accelerating into inclined and deep powder..

In theory, assuming a person is to fall from 200 feet what would best enable them to survive ?  large enough air mattress, boxes stacked correctly to a certain height, or deep enough powdered snow, A 50 foot cotton ball ? hitting water that has a specific type of current and surface wind current ?  I have no clue

Also "flips" while in the air increases wind resistance slowing down acceleration of the falling body correct ?  Landing feet first perpendicularly would be deadly of course except perhaps unless the person is wearing steel toed boots with toes pointed downwards falling into water. (I lack the concentration to learn object physics)

Poor guy,  wonder why he landed in maine ?   LOL

What's fascinating Jerry, is that I've never seen somebody do the running 360 degree stuff...  starting on floor----> running up wall--> appear to be using centripetal force to run on ceiling--->down ajacent wall--->starting point.

This is David Belle being translated on Parkour

So Jerry and I finally met.  He needed something to do here in Connecticut, so I handed him my camcorder and let him film me practicing my newest hobby.  Singing was just too tough.

Kappy, I have seen Copoeira demonstrations and it's not quite like these guys. The martial arts is a free style fighting style, rather than more rigid movements like Karate or Tae Kwon Do. It's pretty cool to watch because the these fighters use flexibility to their advantage and attack from angles you wouldn't expect, thus their advantage.

It's very acrobatic movement. Check out one of the Youtube videos. It's just facinating to watch. It's similar to the martial art of Philipines but uses more feet.
