Post subject:  Mic Stands - Who Uses And Who Likes

Stolen subject from previous discussion.....  Personally when I sing I LOVE a mic stand ..but as a KJ set up I just use the 2 holders on my TV Stand.  I do have a Stand if someone requests it

I've seen people RIP the mic out of the stand only to almost DROP it when they don't return it to the holder properly.  IT maybe my mic CLIP I don't know but even I have trouble getting the mic in and out -- youy have to snap it in and out

If youy try SLIDING the mic cord gets hung up...YOU?

I use stands.  It's like my wooby, I need to have the security of the stand by me!

When the clip is tight it will tug on the cable release when it;s pulled out. The bigger clips should be used. I like the ones that they can slip the mic that comes with a tv stand but I dont like them because when they walk up and put the mic in there is a loop of mic  cable they can trip in.

When you watch a pro they hold the mic with a coil of mic cable. When they put the mic back in they feel the release with their left index finger and put it in the slot on top of the clip.

[font=verdana] Not trying to hijack this thread, but the subject is mic stands, so thought I would ask a question here.  I recently purchased a Peavey boom type mic stand from a man in Tennessee. When the package arrived I had the base, the boom, but no pole. I contacted the seller and he assured me it was in the box when he shipped it.  I have contacted Peavey, and you can’t just buy a replacement pole. Does anyone know where a person could get one? I use mic stands for my wired mics, since they can handle the abuse if dropped. For wireless, I prefer no stand. I have a box lined in foam where I keep the mic for people to pick up and drop off.

4003fg had a great invention for wireless mics when I visited his show in Springville NY. He made a board with holes in it, more than big enough for the mic. Then he made foam "donuts" which he put on the mic, which held the mic when you stuck it in the hole on the board.

I like to use a mike stand when I sing. Some singers at my shows enjoy using the mic stands also

No stands.

If it falls out of the stand it will fall farther than it would have it it just fell out of there hand.

I did use stands when I was using wired mics and found that both were troublesome. I don't use stands with my wireless mics.

At my shows the singers love using the mic stands for the sm58s.

I feel more comfortable singing with a stand nearby even if i remove the mic- i either lean on the stand, use it like a guitar, or leave the mic in the stand so my hands are free to gesture (or dance) while singing.    but i never swing the stand or allow anyone else to do that.   don't want any preventable accidents happening.

The wireless mics get handed to and fro to the singers and i keep them in a waterproof camera case with foam cutouts for each (4) mic.   fortunately most people are mindful and careful with the wireless ones.

I always use a mic stand with a boom.  That way, I my guitar does not hit the stand while I perform.  I do use aviom in-ear monitors for our whole band. --Mike

I have a stand for my wired mic, and use the TV stand for the wireless. I personally prefer to use the stand when I am singing so I can have my hands free to adjust sound and take slips, etc. All the things singers take for granted...

I constructed (rebuilt) this from a snack table.  Please note that the unit is accommodating four of my wireless mics.  The holes for the mics are lined with the plastic tubing from spools of wrapping ribbon (it required two spools).  The most important part of the redesign was to rotate the table top 180 degrees (front to back) so that the table would not easily tilt over and also so it would angle the TV properly (about 15 degrees). The unit is sturdy, lightweight, compact (the top can be folded down or removed) and easily transportable.  And it works perfectly for wireless mics. I also have a mic stand that I use for wired mics. It has a stereo top, but I often add a clip-on gooseneck holder so it can hold a total of 3 mics.  I never use that stand for wireless units!!

Old School here.....I use (2) wired sm58's with stands.  I like to sing with a stand...I have a cordless sm58 for hosting, but I sang with a wired mic and stand during the training night.  I couldn't get my trainee to turn the mic up enough to hear...uggggh, so it wasn't good.  It's not matter to me though, it's a learning thing!  MrD

I couldnt do without my mic stand when I perform. I let the emotion of the song and the interaction with the crowd influence how I approach a song and some I just stand several feet away and blast out...my arms arent long enuff then

When singing I prefer that the stage have a mic stand. It give the singer a choice.

I used to be a "No Stand" guy. But I had so many request for a microphone stand, that I finally got one. Now I love it.

Funny thing is: It's one of those Onstage stands, where you have to twist the grip on top to change the height. Most people can't figure it out. Had some funny moments with that stand. lol

I like it... it's my crutch! Many times I don't like to use my hands when singing karaoke... yet I do when I talk! LOL!

It's pretty hard to move up toward and away from the mic with any precision when it is in a stand and you're having to lean forward and pull away. When I'm doing backup singing, I always leave the mic in the stand because it is not as important to create a very specific response...and if you're doing backup with 1-2 other singers, you all need to stay within a certain area of the mic. As a soloist, though, you must be able to put the mic close to and away from your mouth to compensate for loudness and quietness in your volume.

But let me add this because someone else will if I don't - it certainly depends on the type of mic you're using. I am basing my suggestions on SM58, corded and cordless, or Audix mics. Also depends on the mixing ability of the person at the board. I just find that there is no way I can do any sort of dynamic interpretation of a song without moving the mic toward and away from my mouth.
