I just checked out the working area for a new gig that I have starting tomorrow night.

It's not totally new, I have been doing parties in the hall in the back of the club for a few years. Now, they want me up front in the bar.

It looks like I've got about 100 square feet to work with in front of a big screen TV with one power outlet. Speaker placement could be a challenge, the speakers have to fit in the space. The room is pretty small, so I probably won't have to worry about feedback, because I won't be able to turn the volume up very loud.

I hate small spaces...

Now I suppose I'll need another minature system...

10 x 10?  That's smaller than one of my girls bedrooms!

I might be able to steal a bit more space, but it's still really cramped. Funny, all the time I've been working in the building I never looked in there. Now, all the people that have gone to the parties want me to be the "karaoke guy" for the bar. It's sort of an audition, but then again, I'm not sure I want the job. I'm between regular gigs, so I accepted a couple of nights there, but we'll have to see how it goes. I prefer doing parties and weddings, so I can have some of the summer to do other things...

That is a small space. Hard to get that "party" feeling going when you can't really have volume, too. I decided to stop a gig that I had picked up for Thursday nights last year because the area was too small - I was worried that with people getting pretty drunk and everything so close together, if there was a wreck (someone falling into equipment) it could get too expensive.  I was constantly shifting seating around and the regulars (pre-karaoke) hated the intrusion. Problem is, when I get called and requested, I always say yes...Almost need a powered mixer, a CDG player (or computer), two speakers, two mics, and call it a day in a room that size.  Probably one of those 'passport' like systems would work in a room that size.

See, that's just what I said...I will now have to buy a minature system...

My speakers and stands will take up half of the space, and my table the rest. maybe I can stand out in the parking lot with my wireless  :shock:

I say this in earnest.  While you should bring "both" speakers with you, consider using just one.  Test it out and make sure everything is set for "mono" while you do so. I think you'll be surprised with the results of using just one speaker

I set up more equipment in less space.

A small powered mixer and 2  - 12" lite weight speakers works great in this instance . I bought a system just for THESE type of gigs.

Behringer - B212  pair for $300.

Just a question.

Do you charge less for short changing them on the system?   Since it's not the one they maybe have heard and are expecting to have used.

^ That doesn't determine my price. I did a job last Friday with Bose 802s. But that was the best system for this particular room, not my big system. It was a small space and they wanted it fairly quiet. I actually charged $25 more because it was a one nighter.

Got 'em all now. They still said they all had a good time. And I'll be doing it again I guess.

Update on new gig.

Well, it actually went really well. The place was packed when I got there, not even enough room to get through the crowd to the set-up area. Friday night crowd they said, but most of them would be gone by 7:00 PM they told me.

They helped me unload my truck and moved the crowd out of the way, and as I set-up they moved tables and people out of the way, until I had enough room. Very helpful and accomidating.

I started with some music videos, and the people loved them. I started working the room, talking to people asking what type of music they liked, etc. I had some special pens that I made at work, a new product that I told them I would give to the first 6 singers. Within a few minutes I had a stack of 20 singers. The rotation increased during the night to about 25, with a few coming in and a few falling out.

Most of the main crowd stayed for the whole night. Afterwords the owner said that he had never seen most of these people stay past 7:00, so I did a pretty good job of holding them.

All in all it was very good night, and it took me a few minutes to get the sound right, but it actually sounded pretty good.

EXCELLENT! sounds like you're on your way to a very successful and L-O-N-G show there.
