It was '66 or '67 when back from the Med we were back kicking (@$%&#!) on the pool table in a typical port Navy bar in Norfolk VA. I had a pleasant high going and had 2 or 3 runs on a table at $20 a game. Now bear in mind my monthly income including sea pay was $275/mo.  All of a sudden when the jukebox was silent a barmaids voice from a back booth hollered "The only time I ever peddled my (@$%&#!) was when I was riding a bicycle". I made a mental note and looked to see who it was. She was a very petite cute blonde with class that one does not normally see in port bars. The competion was very heavy for there were 20,000 sailors for every gal in town but luckily I wooed her after awhile and we spent a lot of nights together.

She informed one night that her mother who was a secetary in DC for the bigwhigs was retiring and moving down and would be moving in with her. OH MY GAWD!! This is the end of a good situation. How old is she?  '69.. Oh F.. The weekend came when I left the ship and met the Mom. I walked in and at the kitchen table sat the most beautiful and petite classy lady I have ever seen in my life. Her eyes glowed and sized me up and down and when I took her hand our looks became mutual in which she totally erased every inner wall I ever had. During ther following weeks she taught me many things about life. Let your imagination run and yes it was true.

We would go to dances and fast ones with the daughter and slow with Mom. One night out of impulse I asked the Mom to marry me. She got very sober and very serious and made a speech which has stuck with me for the rest of my life. She said : "Son if you ask me that again you will be sober, you will be cleancut, tie is optional but you will ask me as a Gentleman and not as a Gawd Damn Drunk".  She taught me the ways of a man and a gentleman.  She left eventually with some millionare and me and shorty was left alone again. Winter was coming on and she need a warm coat. After 6 years in this home port I got shore duty at WSMR in New Mexico I was not unfamiliar with it for I had attended radar schools there and it was a short jump to Jaurez.. With TAD and travel pay I bought a cute white little coat and had it wrapped and put a sticker on it that said To Shorty With Eternal Love. Went into the bar and told her keep this behind the bar it is very important.   In the middle of the second drink she was shrieking and standing there wearing her new coat. She flew from behind the bar and we hugged for the last time.  I finished the last beer and walked out into a winter night with snow and leaned against the building ans cried like a baby. For this road had come to an end and I had the rest of my life to deal with.

For the rest of my life I wondered what I would be at '69. Wondered if I would have the class of that lady sitting at the table. For years I doubted if I even would be alive, yet 2000 passed and here I am. For years I struggled with alcoholism and other problems. I have grown spiritually and know the important things of life. To that lady I stood before years ago. Now I am a Gentleman, my word is good as gold, my laws are the natural and spiritual laws which truly govern. Now I stand before you, sober, clean shaven, I might have a tie.. I am now a Gentleman. Would you marry me?
