I am posting this here because more people view this forum that would have the expertise to answer this question. It is for those of you with mixing experience. Have you ever watched a show on TV with singers and notice the person mixing the music and singer are off? I'm watching Idol the other night and was discusted at the poor mixing skills. They have a top notch band behind the singers, I'm sure they pay top dollar for, but you'd never know it. I couldn't hear them. Talk about singers on top of the music, that's all I heard ! I felt bad for David Cook because his style of rock needs volume from the band. You can listen to a soft ballad with low music, but a kickin rock song needs volume. Am I the only one who is noticing this? Or is there something about TV that is different. |

My wife also noticed during the first 5-6 shows the mics sounded lousy (hissed a little and had no warmth). She wondered if that had to do with the fact that they were "simulcasting" it for the first time this year over the internet? And, yes, AI has a great band, great backup singers and maybe a lousy mix. We can't really tell because we are not hearing it live. But I have the same complaints as you Babs. |

I don't watch AI much but did check out his version of "Baba" on Youtube. Here's a guy with a great voice for contemporary material. But every time I've watched him he's straightjacketed into singing classic rock, which places a premium on extended high range. More than once I've seen him take the song down 1 or 2 from the original. And they keep telling us this isn't supposed to be karaoke. On "Baba" he sang most of the song down a whole octave (!) although he did hit a few high ones towards the end. I can't remember the mix but I found the whole concept of making a slamming Who classic like "Baba" softer and gentler offensive. Kind of like Richard Cheese doing "Down With The Sickness" Whoops that's not offensive. That's hilarious! |
