I do two places. The first normally has a "crowd" of under 10 on a weeknight with now entertainment often down under 5 (they make their living on the weekend). So my thursdays shows there which usualy end up with 20-25 singers and another 15 non singers is pretty "good" for them. If the weather is bad the totals can fall down to 10-15 singers and another 5 non singers, wich is still more than double two nites earlier in the week. The other bar is much bigger and normally has 50-80 people there on a average night without karaoke. With karaoke I can push it up to about 100, but not all are there for the karaoke obviously. Friday I had over 50 different singers in a 4 hour show, and I know about 20 of them at least came out specifically for karaoke.... I think the question is how many people does the karaoke bring into the bar that would not be there otherwise. In both venues on a "good" night I can pull about 30-40 people more into the bar than the situation if there was no other entertainment. On a bad night it is down to 15. But in a town where I have often seen bands playing to rooms with less than 5 people its not all that bad. I know my bars, and I think it is not really fair to count the people that are going to be there regardless of your show or not (even if sometimes they sing). |

The reason karaoke makes such a difference, beyond what it *seems* to add to the bottom line, is that people bail on an empty bar. If there are some people there, they might stay. That is the reason it survives places with not that many singers. |
