If I can remember that far back - now I'm guessing here, but I bet it was "We got the Beat" or "Hit me with your Best Shot". I have no idea where?

The Chair - George Strait
Powell Street Station - May 1994
KJ - Lay Back Lee's Karaoke
I sucked but I liked the rush
From that point I was hooked

I was pretty tanked on Tequila poppers my first time, but it was a late night in 1989. The show was going to close up soon & asked if I wanted to sing. I put up Nights In White Satin - Moody Blues.

My guess is it was 1996, "The Freshman" by the Verve Pipe (home town heroes, yeah).

When my now fiance and I first started visiting a karaoke bar and having made some karaoke friends shortly thereafter I finally accepted a challenge to sing by Dec 31st of that year. For 2 - 3 months I would fill out song slips and then put them in my pocket for "safe keeping" Finally on Dec 20th (it was a rather slow night) I put my first song slip in "The Keeper Of The Stars" by Tracy Byrd. I thought it might be my first and last song so I wanted to sing one to my lady. Ended up doing 4 more that night and turned into a "karaoke whore"
Oh yeah, it was at Guldens Roadhouse in Maplewood, MN

1991 I went to a bar after a wedding rehersal for my wifes cousin. I had never seen karaoke being done before. Everyone else in the wedding party was picking out songs so I picked one too. "All My Ex's Live In Texas" George Strait. I did OK to the surprise of the much younger and more karaoke experienced group I was with including my son. I was hooked from then on.

It's only been about 3 years since I started singing Karaoke, I really wish I could remember what the first song was. The night I first tried singing Karaoke, the bar was completely empty, in fact the Karaoke was set up outside that night and not a soul was there except the guy putting in the disks. I decided to give it a try even though I hadn't sang since I was in the the school choir 30 years before. Even thought there wasn't anyone there I was still nervous and shy. After a few songs I was totally hooked. After that night all I needed was a little encouragement and I began to blossom. With practice I gained confidence. I'm really glad I discovered Karaoke.

3 years almost to the day, Mid-May 2005. I got up with my wife Jeannie and we did "These Boots Are Made For Walking", to the laser disc that has Nancy herself dancing and lip-syncing in white gogo boots. My first solo song was "What A Wonderful World". I didn't do it again for about 3 months, but you can believe I have made up for lost time since then...
I couldn't tell you the name of the place, but it was a restaurant in Wild Rose, Wisconsin. We were there to scatter the ashes of my Uncle George...

She probably does a better job than I do! I am not all that good of a Louis, and there are others who do the song better than me, so I don't do that one any more.
I am looking forward to my next Northwest trip. The hard part is going to be visiting all the KJs up there who have shows!
I am hoping I will get there in August, which is as I recall a glorious time to be there. (I spent two years living in Bremerton/Port Orchard, and have visited many, many times.)

August is almost always a great month here. Right now we are actually having some unseasonably nice weather. Temps are in the 70's to 80's. I had on the A/C in my car today! This makes up (kind of) for the long extended Winter.

WOW.....talk about "flashbacks"!! WAY..WAY..WAY..back in '67-'69, I was the lead singer in a band, and the last time I had sung in public was March of '69, just before I went into "The Service". (4 yr. tour) Well, after that, did what most did, got married, job, kids, etc.,started dj'ing in '78 or '79 (can't remember exactly) when my regular job hours allowed it, then gave it up, ( regular job WOULDN'T allow it) then job hours changed again, so back to dj'ing (private parties only) then got "seperated". In 1990, some friends of mine took me to Weirs Beach in New Hampshire for a 'long weekend". (Friday -Tuesday) Well, that Monday, being our "last" night, we all went to a place called the "Sandbar Lounge", and they were having a Karaoke contest. One of my friends remembered I used to sing in a band so suggested that I enter as "a kick". So....with beers, peer pressure, and a "what the h**l" attitude. I entered. I did "Mack The Knife" (Bobby Darin), and WON!!!
Got $100 and a T-shirt. The funny thing about it was that there were a couple of "locals" that came up to me afterwards, and told me they almost left when they saw that I was going to sing that song because most "destroy" it. But they told me it was "right on" from the start and that eveyone they talked to agreed that I deserved to win. SO......I was "back in the saddle again". Went to karaoke bars all the time after that, and about 5-6 years ago, started KJ'ing myself. As a matter of fact, my current venue has just decided to keep entertainment throughout the summer, which is something they've never done before. ( I'm the only entertainment ) So...along with the "flashback" that this post prompted, I also get to share with you the news about my "contract extension" and the "flashBUCKS" that come with it. I know this was a "little long" concerning the OP, but....just like to share "stuff".

Ohh..wow...FIRST song I ever sang at karaoke? *frown* Must have been either 9 to 5 or Blue Bayou...maybe Walkin' After Midnight? I know I was singing country almost exclusively at the time...oh...this is going to bug me now.....*laugh*
Oh...forgot to say where...my dad worked for City Hall in Riverside, Ca, and they had a street faire in the downtown area every Weds night and they set up karaoke at the bandstand.

Well, the first time I did karaoke, it was LIVE BAND karaoke (yay!) , and I sang "Psychobabble" by the Alan Parsons Project. As for as regular karaoke w/CD's, I think probably the first one was "One Fine Day" by the Chiffons. (That was one of the first, anyway.)
...Oh, you wanted to know WHERE I sang? Well, the live band karaoke one was actually at an Alan Parsons fan-fest (which explains why the live karaoke band happened to know a song that's not very well-known). My first "regular karaoke w/CD's" experience was at a place that doesn't have karaoke anymore (darn).

I think it was "Hurt So Good" but I'm not sure. Probably something classic rock like that.
The reason I can't remember exactly even though it was just a few years ago is because it wasn't a "bolt of lightning" experience. I was there with friends to see what karaoke was and if I could incorporate it into my stage show. After watching all of them get up and have fun with it I thought yeah I ought to work it in.
Edit: I'll add that I had no idea what I was getting into.

We were at a dance band concert. During the intermission they had some kind of new gizmo - Laser Disc Karaoke. I got up and sang Heuy Lewis - "Jeart of Rock n' Roll" I even had a guy from the band do a Sax solo to the Pioneer track. I was hooked.
I sometimes think cocaine would have been cheaper...
So many songs...so many disks...so much money!!!!

Well it must've of have been about 7 years ago. I had really never even seen karaoke before. Me and a friend of mine were in a bar and it was getting close to the end...we were all shined up. Some one had just done some hard rock song, so we had the bright idea to try one. We did (I should say me, because my buddy just stood there while MrD belted it out) Metallica - Enter Sandman. I'll never forget it. It wasn't good, but I was certainly into it. I was instantly hooked. We got kicked out of the bar soon after that. We were trying to stop a fight, but that didn't matter we all got thrown out anyway...MrD
