We had a couple discusions about slow nights. I felt fortunate that I did't really deal with that anymore. That will teach me to get cocky. Saturday night the first 2 hours were me and 2 other singers! Firday the bar was packed inside and out. Aaaarg! I sang more than I have in a year. Thank goodness I had a crowd by late night. I go from 9- 2am.

The only thing I can figured happened was people are unsure if there is a band on Saturdays or karaoke, so they don't come in. The only way they are informed is if their is a flyer up in the bar for a band. People don't come out for the bands. In fact the owner complains about it all the time.

I know I need to announce it on karaoke nights, but half the time I don't know if there is a band until last minute. And I am not told. I to have to check the walls for flyers to see if one is booked. It has been like this for many yrs and the owner will not give me notice. Sometimes I find out Wed. that Saturday is a band. It just isn't enough time to let people know.

I have a standard bar-flyer template that I use when going into a new place. Maybe you can do one of those, and put it up when you know you will be on. If it is a template, all you have to do is change the date and print. If you want to keep it generic, print it on photo paper and put it up when you're on, and take it down when you're not.

Another lovely thing that came out of this slow night was the fact I had a guy that didn't understand I only do karaoke. I've never ever ever have needed to play music at this bar. In fact if I did play music between songs the patrons would hang me. He drove me nuts asking me to play songs. I'm not a DJ and don't have the resources to do what he was asking. From now on I'll bring in a couple CDs just in case.

Sorry that you had to deal with a 'slow night' like the rest of us, isn't it weird how that happens like that out of the blue.  At least you can get flyers and stuff up in the bar sometimes.  I have the hardest time, getting the one place I play at to advertise correctly.  It's all word of mouth, he won't change the sign when I'm not playing there and people come and get po'd, then won't come the next weekend because they don't know.  No advertising in the bar at all.  It's a crap shoot on whether there will be entertainment or not....not a easy way to build a good/consistant crowd.  I can also understand your pain, trying to tell the guy.....that you don't have a song to play.  Some people just don't understand!  MrD

Sat we did a non reg bar again. Its hard to get a crowd unless you are there every week. But we did have a good crowd of party goers. With DJ you have the choice of music and you can control the mood and atmosphere. It's actually easier to draw or keep a crowd with good DJ  and I'm not talking scratcher or the real DJ. We had no more than 10 singers all night but we had a high energy dancin drinkin crowd. The owner was happy. I charged more than his regular karaoke host and he didnt hesitate.

Oh Crap, I hope I didn't sound like a spoiled brat. What I should have said was - I've been at this venue so long I was feeling safe from having a horribly  slow night and forgot how frustrating it can be. I meant no disrespect.

Our Sat & Sun were slower than normal this weekend mainly due to the weather.  First really nice days - in the 80's & 90's & alot of people took advantage & went camping and outdoor activities - I hate summer months.

July is rough around here. For the first time I am booked on the 4th and with the Greeley stampede going Kenny Rogers will have a concert that night. Then in a couple of weeks Cheyenne cranks up.  Its a hit or miss during those nights

July 4th which lands on a Friday is the slowest weekend here. We have 3 main suburbs that have their festivals. I never work 4th of July because my family has a huge get together. I told the bar owner I won't be there. It will be the first Friday I've missed in 5 yrs.

We were only half full on Saturday. :( Same reasons I suspect.

I don't know what to expect this Memorial  weekend. It all depends on the weather. If it's cold we will be good. Thursday should be normal.

I have to admit the forum lately has been much more friendlier. There was a time no matter what you'd post someone would find the negative in it. It was like walking on eggs to post a topic. I love how friendly everyone has been this year!

that's why it's kinda good to have a FEW music discs, or video discs to play off your player (or play some on your computer)... sometimes, you might have to wing it!
