As a SINGER, if you're looking up a song by Artist...

I know the "proper" way is to have the last name first, but really...
if you're drunk and looking for an Elvis song, do you really think to look under P ?

I've don't think I've ever seen Elvis listed as anything but Elvis in a karaoke book...no last name listed.

I've been listing my artists first name first last name last but sorted by last name so
Patsy Cline would be listed alphabetically under "C".

This has never been an issue before, however it seems within the last year or so the newer people don't have a clue how to read the book.

Alphabetical order seems to be something that people don't learn in school anymore - at least the 20's crowd - seriously, the number of people who, when I say the book is in 'alphabetical order,' they STILL ask me to help them find the song or the artist. (think it is because they're computer dependent on a 'sort' function?)

I personally sort my books by first name first, but when I go to other shows, I can find it either way. Doesn't honestly matter to me. I like going first name first, because many people think in the lines of the artist's first name, or if it's a group... that way as well.

I dunno... it just seems that if I'm drunk, I'm looking for Garth under G, not B
(Karen and Lon know how drunk I can get)  <--  sarcasm

It sure would be nice to hear from some SINGERS on this topic  :)

Funny thing I did list my book last name first, first name last for one printing & that COMPLETELY screwed everyone up - mostly the regulars & they complained enough to put it back lol.  So now I just try to educate the newbies.  I recently went double columned in the books as well & this has played with peoples minds also, they look at the first column & then move to the next page & come up to me & say hey I know you had this song, but it's no longer in the book.  I have them bring the book to me & point right to it on the page they were on, the look on their face is pretty funny when they realize they missed the entire second column.

First name first is the only way. It solves the problem of what to do with an artist name like "J. Geils Band".

If it's good enough for the phone companies, it's good enough for me.

I agree with looking for Garth under "G", not "B"....too confusing after you've had a few I think. So I list my books Garth Brooks........MrD

When I started making my books I wondered about this, and took my lead from the CDGs, which almost always lists artists first - last.

In fact until now I thought that's the way everyone did it. But it looks like most of you do it the other way around.

Interesting. Anyway I've never got any negative feedback from singers about having the first name first.
