Post subject:  Room Setup

I agreed to DJ/KJ for a mate who is having a birthday party, but is hard up.  Doing it cheap, but these things always lead to more bookings.

She originally had a lovely room, big and spacious - but the hotsel closed.  Last minute she grabbed the local rugby club.  The room is an awkward layout, and IMHO a bit small.

I have included a plan view - see how there isn't really anywhere to setup near the screen?  I am thinking of setting up where show, an running a well taped down cable - maybe even taped to the ceiling.  Would go wireless video, but too much of a lag.

The entrance doors could be an issue, so would need to bolt one shut.

Any other suggestions?  Usually good with room layouts, but this one is an (@$%&#!)!  I'd like to setup the other side of the room, but the food area stops that too!

maybe move the speaker by the entrance next to the screen on an angle towards the room ?  Peopl could still sing in front of YOU and read the screen ( i guess )

I concur.  Maybe the speaker between the food & tv aiming back toward the seated area - that way it isn't blasting out the bar staff at the bar.  What is in the seated area?  Is that a separate room.  Is the room you are in going to be a dance floor of some sort?  Where are the primary people going to be?

OK the seated area is for all intents and purposes a separate room.  People will be dancing I guess in the room shown.

It's a crap room in my opinion, but when needs must.  Also, it's an echo magnet :(  Feedback is gonna cause a real issue here!

But yeah, you say put the speaker near the screen, almost facing the other speaker?

Maybe not directly facing, you want them a little off line from each other.
It's going to be a tough room as being right in the mid of the entrance & the other room, people are going to be walking in front of (and possibly in back of) your singers all night.

I am drunk, so will cut my usual British level of politeness.

It's a crap room and it will suck.  But as someone who would like (at some point) to be considered professional - it's my job to make it suck as little as possible.

And so, will get there early, run soundchecks, suck it up and pretend to look like I know what I'm doing! :)

That's always a key thing!  Even if you have no clue, make it look like you know exactly what is going on.
