I AM THINKING OF ADDING A SUB OR TWO TO MY SYSTEM THAT ALREADY USES A PAIR OF PEAVEY SP5XT ( THAT ARE TEN YEARS OLD & STILL KICK *SS). ANY INPUT WOULD GREATLY BE APPRECIATED, AND ALSO SOME TIPS ON SET UP ON A SYSTEM WITH THE SUBS. I HAVE ALSO CONSIDERED UPGRADING TO A PAIR OF PEAVEY SP4XT THAT HAVE THE DUAL 15", JUST TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT SOUNDS BETTER, THE DUAL SET UP, OR USING THE SUBS. THX.

There are a couple ways to go.
For the SP-5 I would look into a set of Peavey SP118X8. You would really want to get a separate amp to run these & an external crossover to divide the frequencies to the subs & your SP5's. This would be the best set-up since you would still run them with the SP-5 & would be able to do larger rooms & outdoor shows alot better & the combination is killer. With a couple external amps & 3 way crossover, you can actually get a true 3 way system if you desire.
You could get a set of powered subs, these already have the amp & crossover built in.
The SP-4's are a great speaker, but keep this in mind they are taller (almost 4 feet) so they may not fit in some of the smaller places (although this is where you would keep your SP-5's). I run the older SP-4ti series & they still kick! I do sometimes run them on top of a set of Peavey SP2118, depends on my mood ;c)

Running a sub with "karaoke" music can get squirmy real quick.
Without getting too technical, it takes a little practice. Sing through it before you unleash it on your friends
It's fun, but it can get over bearing - .

Subs aren't hard to use at all, you just got to remember the bass levels don't have to be set as high.
The JBL SF series isn't very good. One of the bands I run sound for has a set that they insisted on using. The sound is very tinny, you can't bi-amp them (without modifications internally). During a break I switched them for my SP-4's & the sound came to life. Don't skimp on amps or speakers.

I use 5 diffrerent brands of subs.. but with only 3 different brands of tops.
depending on the rooms and the gigs... how far the room's throw or gig's capacity that I need it for. As Sammy mentioned earlier subs can get an inexpierenced KJ into trouble very quick.
Most may find this shocking and then again not...
In my sound expierences...
Personally, I like the SRx dual 18" Sub from JBL, with an old set of EAW "LA" series monitors on top that we bought from a sound company in New Jersey for little or nothing.. ($400.00 each) Through an Audio Broker. They sound like something just out of the box. They are my prize babies.. Although it looks quite crappy on the front line to have wedge monitors up on the mains... & they sure sound great!

15" subs are better with main speakers that are 10"-12". 18" work better with 12"-15". You CAN run a 15" sub with a 15" main, but unless you have it crossed over & powered properly, you may not notice a huge difference.

Thanks Lon,
That's sort of what I was thinking ... I would love to get a 18" sub but right now I'm only doing 1 show a week with a (crossfingers) chance of a second one . So money $$$ is tight to go out and buy a sub..Would love too but right now ..You understand

Remember, alot of small rooms don't require 2 subs in a venue!!!
They can actually sound really good with one with the crossover set right...
I do a 200 person room with only 1 sub actually on sitting in the front under the table, and the tops on Flown in the light Trussing run in stereo. this system uses the amp's crossover and bypasses my "Driverack" processor. but still uses the comp/limiter.
It still fills the room well and eq's nicely.
