So I bought a Behringer Ucontrol USB soundcard and I plugged it into my Yamaha EMX512 mixer from the Tape out on the mixer into the Input jacks on the sound card. I have a set of Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers plugged into the output of the sound card right now rather than running my big speakers through the mixer. The question I have is how do I capture the entire audio stream coming from the mixer into the computer through the sound card? I can load an mp3 file into audacity and then record just a vocal track to go along with the mp3, that I figured out how to do. I want to be able to play a Karaoke file in Karafun or winamp and have everything get recorded by audacity. It just occurred to me that I might need to plug the output from the sound card into the mixer instead of into the external speakers. As far as audacity goes though, where do you click to tell it you want to just record some incoming audio instead of importing an mp3 and recoding a vocal track to go with it? Thanks |

well if I am recording "on the fly" then I take a line from my m-audio fast track headphone into my mixer than a line from my mixer to the line in of my soundcard and bingo Generally I use headphones though cos the condenser mic is a tad sensitive when it comes to speakers. when I am recording this way I plug the speakers into the mixer when recording on seperate tracks then the headphones are plugged straight to the soundcard and the condenser into a seperate pre-amp and I bypass the mixer altogether |

I've used Audacity for some smaller projects, it's a great little peace of software. I believe you have to go in under "Edit" and you will find "preferences". Just click on the I/O tab and tell it where you want to get the audio from. You may have to tell it on the main screen also, seems like you can select between Mic, line or maybe a couple of other choices. It's been a while since I've used it but I think that will get you in the ball park. I 'm pretty sure that your U Control USB interface is plug and play so it should show up as one of your input options, I know when I have my Lexicon Omega plugged into the puter Audacity see's it. |
