Here in my hometown (Stockport,UK)...... A karaoke league exists..not that bad an idea..(they run it on a Monday..so the Bar hosting it is guaranteed a full house on otherwise a quiet night).....but it starts as fun..then one Pub/bar starts to pull in semi pro singers to try to get the edge....before you know it all the teams are doing it..nightmare for a KJ...(..yo buddy one down...more reverb..less bass etc).... ..what I want to know is..does such a thing exist in the US??..a Competetive Karaoke league between Bars??

Other than the usual contests---no---I havent heard of such a thing---but if it did it would quickly be taken over by actual pros/ringers and actual karaoke people would be quickly pushed out. I certainaly would not have anythign to do with that kind of thing.

I've got one in my neck of the woods. Never tried it but it does sound interesting.

I've had someone approach me about this. My response was that I see way too many negatives and not enough positives. Like karaoke "contests", except worse. Karaoke is not a sport.

I don't know, it looks kind of fun to me. From the website it looks like they don't take themselves too seriously. Nor should they: the "national" karaoke league is confined to two venues in Austin, Texas.

Bedford, UK - had one at my local.

They attract the kind of crowd I don't enjoy. All think they are x-factor winners, telling me how to mix them, etc. They get pissy when a non-entrant sings.

Diva's!

If it means a bunch of people who think they know my job better than me, I'd hate it ! It is always irritating to have the know it all telling me how to set my board.

The last person I had like this thought he knew better than me. He bragged of running boards for The Blues House in Chicago. I got tired of hearing him tell me what to do, so I let him change my settings. It was a slow night and I thought fine let's see what this guys got. Maybe I'll learn something. lol Talk about feedback ! I never heard him complain again after that !

I was involved in something like that years ago and I liked it. It was an excuse to schmooze with your teammates who you didn't really know at strange bars. This worked out very well for me.

The KJ's job was simple. He loaded the disks. That was it, no mixer adjustments at all, for anyone, period. That was the only way to have a truely level playing field.
