Is it just me, or do some signers of a lonely, sad breed tend to sing the longest songs they can find in the book?
I've got probably three or four regular singers who haven't much of a life outside my show. That opinion is based on knowledge more than speculation. When I queue up their songs (more times than not) they're in the range of 5-8 minutes each. Do you think this has more to due with attention seeking and a passive aggressiveness, than coincidence?
I posted about this a couple of weeks ago; I've got one person in particular that will submit what I call show killers, seven minute plus songs that are blah, boring, and in my never humble opinion, designed to take control of the audience without regard to affect. Few appreciate her (observation), and I can't imagine she doesn't know and feel it. In fact, it almost seems like she gets a little pleasure out of ripping the seams of the show's fabric. Please grant that my shows are generally country, rock and pop and the energy level is relatively high. She's kind of a screamer too.
Do you notice personalities like this at your shows? What psychological oddities have you identified in your pools of singers?

I certainly know what you mean about some passive aggressive singers.

The two longest songs sung in my room with any kind or regularity are "Master Of Puppets" and "Aenema", both usually done by the most outgoing guys in the bar. What songs are your worst disrupting offenders?

I'd never be able to run a metal only show...>These two DVDs I got from Finland, Iron Maiden and Pantera, are getting used A LOT. All the songs are LONG....and when someone is doing their throaty impression of Pantera and it goes on and on and on and on ... well, you get what I mean. Time for a smoke and I don't.

Actually it's only long if you allow the full instrumental at the end to finish out. The singing part ends at 4:52. Not out of line in the least & if you have the Sound Choice 8146 spot, it fades out shortly after that.
Oddly enough I have been getting swamped with this request as well from the singers.

Hi Bill, thanks for the post. If you want to start a thread about long songs, do it. Your post was a total hijack.
The songs I'm referring to that my lonely, sad singers sing are random. They don't even know half of them. I believe they do it to command the stage for an extended period.
Hell, I've got one girl who talks her way through songs, she literally signals 'smoke break' for half the bar when she takes the mic. Her style ... She sings the songs that the other girls in the bar sing. She'll be very proactive. When she spots someone come in (and she generally knows what they sing), she'll immediately turn in a slip before the other person can do so. It's deliberate and requires an added level of rotation management. She's a faithful regular, and personally I think it's funny as hell. But I will be just as proactive in being fair to all. Sometimes I tell her they'd already turned in a slip earlier, so she'll choose another.

I have a few people who do this on purpose. I find most do it becaue they want more sing time. The people I have in mind pick their songs just because they are long, not because they sing them well.
Most of my regulars actually feel bad if they pick a long song knowing it is rude to others waiting to sing. They'll even ask me if it's okay first. So I guess in a way it is a selfish thing to do. If they really like the song considerate people will wait for a slow night to do it.

So can you just take these long songs out of your book? I'm serious. What about songs that get totally butchered? Ever consider taking them out of your book? Just taking a dark black marker and line out those songs until you reprint your books?
This is why I'm thinking of not being a KJ. . .

I thought about taking a few of these long songs out of the books. The problem with that is sometimes it is okay to sing a long song. If I am really busy I just explain to people it is to busy to have a 12 minute song sung. I've never had a problem approaching it that way. Most people just pick something different.

Some people want more song time, as Babs said. They almost always pick long songs.
Some people seem obsessed with certain songs (I got tired of War Pigs awhile back for this reason, and also In the Still of the Night by Whitesnake). You know how you get a song in your head and it follows you around all day? I think karaoke singers can get a song in their head, and they just have to sing it. And again. And again.
I doubt people intentionally do this to undermine a show. I think the goal isn't so much to get rid of these songs, as to build up enough of a singer base that these songs will represent a very small fraction of what gets sung in a night, or have enough singers that other people will cover the songs and add some variety.
I had an instance awhile back where I wanted to sing The Way by Fastball. The KJ said I couldn't because person X sang the song way to much and she had retired it!

He actually had a contest to see which songs would get pulled out of his books.
