Good evening to everyone, hope you're having a great day and night.


I have a question for 'RECORDING ARTISTS'...


I'ts been more than a couple years that I've not written (songs) for recording artists; hyperthetically speaking, How much do songwriters get as a percentage of writing songs for Recording Musician Artists? The reason I am asking is simple~ I do believe I'm getting 'screwed'...and getting very tired of it. I stopped writing for five bands since last Nov.,2007...because of the issue of the monies that are due to me for the hard work of writing for them...I'm hoping someone who has been either in the recording studios or singing live would be able to shed some light on how much do songwriters suppose to have a certain percentage...I NEED to know for many reasons, and I truly appreciate your input- It is very valuable and I thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer these questions.

My question is: I know there are many of you on here that also are 'real recording artists' , the ones who actually are bonefied artist that have 'CD's' out, and/or record in studios. A real rcording artist are signed and have a label... If anyone knows any of the numbers, such as :

1.) Songwriters =How much 'percent' of writing songs for artist compared to the singer themselves

2.) Agents

3.) Managers

4.) Recording studio


Can anyone stare me in the right direction too finding out these questions !~ It's been a long, bitter, cold winter, especially having pneumonia...I'm ready to write again for artists that do in fact come by here and listen to your works...

dee more info is probably needed...for instance do you write the lyrics only or do you compose the music?
I believe if you belonged to whatever association it is over there (here it is apra) then they would have guidelines and would work hard on your behalf to ensure you got what you deserved.

I hope it helps. You might also look into ASCAP and the other royalty paying

organization I think it's BMI. You have to be a member of these to get paid royalties

I think. I'm not sure if you were talking about royalties or just getting paid for your

song as a straight out sell of copyright ownership. Anyway. I doubt any of this helped

but I thought I'd give it a try.

As Vicki and Trav have already noted ASCAP and BMI are great sources but you must belong (e.g. be a member in good standing with dues current) in order for them to protect your rights. You should also copyright every song you write BEFORE you show it to anyone who might be interested in your works to protect yourself and any potential earnings.

If you don't already have an attorney start looking for one and make sure you have all your paperwork (proof of when the song was written, copyright dates, proof of copyright, written contracts, notes from verbal contracts, etc.) and witnesses or affidavits from witnesses to prove your case(s) in court or negotiations with all parties involved (they'll definitely ask for all those things). Definitely check the link Trav provided and do a bit more research before you take your case to your attorney.
