Karaoke Scene's Karaoke Forums :: I need a song for competition!!!!!!

My competition songs are usually Blaze of Glory by Jon Bon Jovi, Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi (yes, there's a difference), Open Arms by Journey, or depending on the crowd, Smooth Up In Ya by Bulletboys. I've got the range for it, so I don't pull any punches and go for the win right out of the gate. I've won two competitions, got second in another, and didn't place at all in another (the judges were sitting at the same table as the two guys who squared off in a tie - go figure).

I know these songs aren't what you're looking for, but my advice in contests is to leave no doubt in the judges' minds who's the best. Go after the biggest song you can manage without squealing, that has some heart and passion to it, and will make the crowd take notice.

Hey People! I' ve got a prob. I need a good male country song for a competition coming up any sugg? I' ve thought about " Good Directions" or " I Can Still Make Cheyenne". Any suggestions would be appreciated, comments are welcome too. Thx

Practically anything by Rascal Flatts? I admit country is my weak spot, but every RF song I've ever heard has been a singer's dream (or nightmare, as the case may be).

How about that new one from George Strait & Chesney........ 'Shift Work' , it's catchy. Just guessing here, but if you're thinking of 'Cheyanne' 'Directions' , those are not exactly tenor, so thats why I mention Shift Work. My wish is a work out but fun to sing, It's kind of demanding cause it's go go go, not a lot of spots to rest in, and then you're slamed into the chorus. Is this a local or national contest ? Good Luck with it.........

You haven't really mentioned what your vocal range is but going by your song choices I'd guess 2nd Tenor or 1st Baritone maybe? With that limited information to go on how about Alan Jackson's "Good Time", it'd be a good crowd pleaser with a great tempo and a challenge with the tongue tangler factor. I'm sure we could all come up with several other suggestions if you can give us more info re: your range and style

Hey guys and gals! Thanks for the suggestions. Your right, with the info i gave, you really didn't have much to go on. Rascal Flatts is really too high for me. I can sing pretty much anything George Strait, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Merle Haggard, Ricky Van Shelton along that lines. What my actual range is i don't know. Is Newer better than Older? And Is up tempo better than slower? In competition I mean. I' ve been invited to sing at a local Opry house. I can sing alot more than the guys ive mentioned, thats just off the top of my head. I hope that helps clerify a little. Anymore help is appreciated. Thanks Again. I LOVE THE GOLDEN OLDIES BY THE WAY, CAN UAUALLY NAIL EM EVERY TIME!!!!

It sounds like you're looking at country songs and unfortuantely I am not that familiar with them. One mistake I noticed that some people make in competitions is going for a song that the person themselves finds challenging instead of picking something that is comfortable for your range. You want to sing a song that isn't oversung, but the audience is familiar with. Slow songs seem to get ignored by most crowds unless you have quiet captive audience. I'd pick a song you a very comfortable with that you can show off your character with. Try out the songs you've picked on other audiences (karaoke) to get their reaction. What you may think is a winner may not be. If you can walk into a karaoke venue you've never been to before and knock their socks off you know you have winner. I've picked songs out before that I thought would be a huge hit and heard crickets in the audience. On the other hand I'll sing a song I really don't care for and the place goes crazy. You never really know for sure until you try it out.

I totally agree with you and a couple right before you , go for the throat , or just do it for the experience factor, which is a great thing to. If you want to win, you need to blow away your judges, that's the plan, regardless of the tune picked. ........Open Arms, that's one I'm working on right now. I've been in a few Country competitions, I play guitar, and I think it holds the song ok , but I'm looking for a backing track for it, have you found one in D (original key) that you like ? A song with identical chords in slightly diff order is 'I don't want to miss a thing' from the Armagedon soundtrack (Steven Tyler), it was a crossover cover hit into Country, done by Mark Chestnut aroung 98 I think....... I had planned on using that in my next competition, shame I can't use both but they are way too similar.

I knew i found the right place! Wish idve found you guys sooner. I love it. You guys are great! Thanks you all are helping tremendously. i think alot of my problem is I know so many songs thers is just too many to pick from. I keep second guessing myself. You are right though. the point is to win. So im gonna go with the grabbem by the sac approach right out of the gate. im gonna try a few out tonight at karaoke. im goin to aplace i havent been in a while. It should be a good judge. Thanks you guys are great!!!

A great one to consider is Kenny Chesney's "Anything But Mine".....I have personally seen that song win 3 different contests by 3 different singers. It would be a good "summer song" to sing for this time of year. A good thing to do is learn it or any song you choose and sing without reading the words.... that will show that you have a nice stage presence and came to win. Good Luck to ya !!!!!!
