We have had some really bad flooding around here this week

Our normal weds night show is in a small bar in a tiny town that is right on a river. after taking 3 different detours to get there tonight (extra 45 min) I found the bar to be sand bagged 2 feet up the walls and the parking lot full of a foot of water. the owner was so busy protecting his stuff he didnt even think to call us...understandable. My partner and I know that about 1/3 of our patrons lately come from a bar thats about 1 block from my house. they play volleyball or horseshoes then a lot leave to go to either my show or a crappy show in town. so on an whim we walked in and asked the owner if she would have us. We have tryed booking there in the past, but she has had BAD experences with Karaoke. we put her on the spot a bit tonight, so she says "Ill ask around and see if anyone wants it". within 2 min we had about 20 people ask her to do it..how can she refuse..we got our normal pay for the night, AND she wants to have us back. we first walked in about 9:10 and were playing by 9:30. Im pretty excited as this is kinad "the place to be" in this town right now, and has the nicest configuration and size of any bar ive ever done a show in.

Has anyone else ever walked in and done a spur of the moment show? with this owner it was the only way she would have tryed it and in 99% of places you will not have a good crowd of people who already know your show but it may be something I try again. possibly on a friday evening in a venue I know is karaoke friendly.

[font=verdana] I have thought of doing this at some out of town bars in my area, but haven’t tried it till now. I think I would offer them a one time discount just to get my foot in the door, something is better than nothing, and that’s what my equipment is making me sitting in my living room. I am doing a benefit on the 21st for the Oceana County Animal Friends adopt-a-thon during Pentwater’s Spring Fest, so would already have the equipment in my vehicle that evening. Come home, rest a bit, then give it a shot. Your experience is encouraging; I may just give it a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained – right?

imo, be careful with freebies. Ive had managers tell me " if you are willing to give away your time its not worth much" this was in reference to somebody trying to steal my show by giving a lowball price after 2 free ones.
I did tell her it was a discount price , that normaly its 50 a night more on weeknights. but we got what we always get. I started the other show low so he would build it up. now its good but getting a raise is tough. The new bar is thinking about every other to see if it works. I will probably take a couple more shows ath "the discount price" then jack it up. but if you don't plan it in up front it is hard to get.
