Last nights show was rocking and very BUSY - standing room only and someone
comes up to the KJ's table and just drops his bottle of BEER
All over the SLIPS I had on the table ----All over the BOOKS I had on the table
ALL over my MOUSE and MOUSE PAD ......Luckily I had the laptop on its STAND and it was SAVED from ultimate destruction .....and this is after I already made an announcement ..PEOPLE DON'T LISTEN ...after the song I made another CLEAR annoucement about not bringing any drinks up to the table and don't you know
2 seconds later .......there is a glass on the table
I'm thinking about bringing a water pistol and shoot anyone who brings a glass or bottle up to the table RIGHT IN THE FACE

I'd have been hugely pissed at that.
Probably would have said "If you don't listen to me, I don't listen to you." And not taken his requests for that night.
As for the glass on the table - put it on the floor - see how quickly someone will pick it up!

I gotta be honest, I'd have probably lost my top. I get angry when I go to pick my books up at the end of the night and there's beer spilled on them, or a beer sitting on top of one, half the pencils are gone, people have drawn pictures on dozens of slips, etc. I never say anything about it because it's part of the biz, but spilling beer on my gear? That isn't, and would draw the full extent of my wrath.

I am right now drawing some ideas on how to set up so it will be nearly impossible to spill anything on the equipment.
It might mean I will have my Back or SIDE to the crowd while working the mix and cueing up songs ...It just might have to be this way ..anyone work with your back towrads the crowds?

We run a snake either 50' or 100' and actually are in the crowd. We set up along a wall and the only thing on the table is a flat screen keyboard mouse and slips and pens. We face the stage or the audience and like to have the rack next to the wall. At one gig we are on the opposite side with our back to the wall. My mixer is lower than the table and Ive always had a fear of a drink pouring onto it. Another trick is put books on the table and there isnt any room to set a drink. But the way we set up everything is shielded somewhat.

Jam
I read your post and got mad for you. I'm familiar with people not paying attention to announcements. They are to busy drinking and having a good time to catch everything we say over the mic. I have a few ideas bumping around in my noodle.
Setup - I don't know if this will work for you or not. I put my equipment in the back left hand side of the stage. I have a wall on this side with a table, so no one can enter from that side. A long tabe would have the same effect. It is turned to the side, so if I am making adjustments, yes my body is turned to the side from the audience. I stand in front of the mixer, so no one can access it. The singer can enter from the front or opposite side only.

I hope that makes sense.
My other idea is what if you posted a sign on the tv monitor itself that said $5 fine for drinks on the stage or No singers will be allowed with drinks on stage - penalty of lost turn for one rotation.

I had someone spill thier beer on my table last friday. I was able to keep it from getting on anything but this is the guy that use to scream sing and sing with others uninvited. I'm thinking this guy may never sing here again. So we're getting it cleaned up and the bar owner comes up and gets on me for letting him have his beer on my table.
If I only had a taser...... I would have got 2.
Wednesday night I placed a drink table on stage and moved drinks all night.

I've been to one place where the KJ sits high up like a DJ in a club would. The only thing that the singers actually can interact with is the mics and TV. The KJ was protected by a wall.

I would literally lose my mind if this happened to me. I try to set up in such a way as there is zero space on the table to set anything down.
Having said that, there is always one moronic individual who will try to set his drink down on the narrowest, smallest opening of space.
As soon as someone tries, I will literally take the drink from their hand BEFORE it even gets close to being set down.
I then tell them in no uncertain terms that they CANNOT set their drink down near my thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Unless of course they wish to give me a cash deposit to replace said equipment and pay my gig fee(cause I won't be able to finish) should their drink spill.
My bar owner's wife is also pretty good at watching for that stuff too.
I think I've only had 2 or 3 morons who try and they usually are pretty drunk by that time and manage to get themselves tossed before they do any damage to anything in the bar.

Rearranged set up at last nights show and felt much better about not having anything SPILLED onto my equipment.
As I set up in a corner I arranged the tables in an inverted L more like a 7 - 2 tables - The one in the corner had all equipment - one facing the floor ---EMPTY like a blockade - Had one speaker to my right and placed a chair between the speaker and the end of the table to sort of MARK my territory ---this way people who have to move the chair to get behind the tables ---And don't you know someone did
All in all no drinks or glasses got close to the equipment EXCEPT MINE and that worried me in case I turned and knocked it over . The only drawback was facing the corner while cueing up and searching for songs. Mixing wasn't a problem as the mixer was on my left and easily adjusted( another argument for NOT getting a BOX type powered mixer) ............

I remember one time at this local bar in Oregon... I was running the show, called up this boozer... and he actually had the audacity when called up to bring the beer in the glass, and TRY TO SET IT ON MY MIXER! I looked at him as he sat it on the back part of the Mackie, lifted it up and shouted, "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR EVER-LOVIN' MIND??!!!"
His reaction was "chill, dude!"
So I promptly upended it on the floor, and told him he was done for the night!
About had a riot on my hands... I knew I wasn't being diplomatic, I just couldn't believe 1.) he actually had the cajones to think that a sweaty, FULL bar glass on delicate electronics was a good thing and 2.) when I DID get upset, he was so blaze' about it!
This led to one of the first of my rules... no beer or cigarettes near the KJ area!
I didn't even keep my drink near me... sat at the close table of my friends!

I'm with Matt... I think the water pistol thing would be funny, and still get the point across...... unless someone gets really dumb and fights to get the pistol away from you and then sprays you (and equipment)
what if you did something as simple as putting those velvet ropes around your station. Or... those retractable nylon strap things that are everywhere now. Would that work? just an idea
