What are the recent karaoke classics? The songs that keep sticking around and don't go away? Even if you wanted them to? I'll start but feel free to contribute, or disagree with my choices.

Kryptonite
Bytch
Follow Me
Goodbye Earl
Suds In The Bucket
Before He Cheats
It's Been Awhile
My Immortal
With Arms Wide Open
Fallin'
Whiskey Lullaby
Because Of You
Stay (which does seem to want to uh... stay)

And Number One: Ta Da! Picture!

I tended to go with songs from earlier in the decade because I don't know whether the more recent ones will still be coming up all the time in a few years. And I left off remakes like "Killing Me Softly" and "Drift Away" but they could have been counted. And I tried to go guy girl guy girl, but it was tougher to think of guy songs because they are more all over the place stylistically. So I'm not has confident in them.

Thoughts? Additions?

I have to politely disagree with "Suds in a Bucket" and "Whiskey Lullaby". I've never heard them sung, ever. I don't even know what Whiskey Lullaby is. LMAO

I'd be guessing here because I think you're looking for newer songs that would be classics.

Bodies
Rockstar
Live Like you were Dying
Spider Webs
Just a Girl
Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy
With or Without You
Walking in Memphis
Smooth
Put your Lights On

Yeah some of my choices are probably specific to my room. Ooh... but I should have thought of "Save A Horse" Babs... sung (or more typically shouted) all the time at my place.

"Whiskey Lullaby" is a Brad Paisley/Alison Krause duet. It's been done over the years by many couples where I am, but it may be just my area with that one.

And I don't know what "Put Your Lights On" is so there you go.

LMAO Put Your Lights On is Santana. I'm curious about Whiskey Lullaby. I'll have to give it a listen. Who knows you may have given me another duet option. :D

Now is this a thread about possible longevity songs from this decade (2000-current) or the last couple decades? There are alot of 90's songs listed in these lists & even 1 80's song.
But do notice that what you both (so far) feel will last - mostly the newer country over the newer rock/pop!
I get Whiskey Lullaby done quite a bit here also Suds In The Bucket. Do you have these songs Babs or do they just not get done? Put Your Lights On (Everlast with Santana) used to get done quite a bit but was one of those "flavor of the month" songs for us & died. It had a brief ressurection about a year ago, but the person that used to do it quit coming in.

I was going to try to keep it this decade (21st century stuff). If any of mine strayed into the 1990s correct me Lonnie. I'm not looking any of this up it's just off my head.

The newer country does seem to be easier to identify. Even for me in my mostly non country room. Don't know what that means, except maybe country is easier to sing.

Out of the selections you listed
Beeyotch - released 97
With Arms Wide Open - released 99 (probably actually was a hit in 2000)

Out of Babs list
Spider Webs - released 96
Just a Girl - released 95
With or Without You - released 87
Walking in Memphis - released 91
Smooth - released 99 (also probably a hit in 2000)

I think it means that most of the newer rock/pop pretty much blows! Even the younger crowds want the classic rock/pop from 70's-90's over the newer rock/pop of today. Newer country has a definite new attitude today over what it used to be - even up to 10 years ago. The entire look - guys wearing stuff that would never have been considered country years ago, some have tats & hair like a 90's grunge rocker, gals don't have that 'sculptured' country look, more loose & laid back, sound - more of a rock edge than it used to have.

Ooh... you're right about Bytch. Can't believe that it's over 10 years old. How time flies.

Now that I've looked it up Smooth was #1 on the Billboard charts in Dec99 and Jan00. As the first number one of the new century I think it barely makes it.

So like I said I'm trying to keep it 21st century and am interested in what other KJs think, which broadens the area beyond my own room and part of the country.

It's still too new to tell, but Buckcherry - Sorry might be a long runner. I hear it almost nightly at this point.

Sorry is one that came and went in my room. But it could come back again. It was just sung so much last winter.

I think Goodbye Earl will go the way of Earl.

Picture will be framed for the Karaoke Hall of Fame

How about...

Creep
Santeria
You Were Meant for Me
Beautiful

Creep, Santeria, and You Were Meant For Me would all be in my list of most sung songs of the 1990s.

This may be harder than it looks. I goofed on one.

"With Arms Wide Open" reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 2000 so I would call it a 21st century hit anyway. But I almost didn't put this one in the list because it's not sung as much as the others. It does come up steadily though.

We get "Suds In The Bucket" and "Whiskey Lullaby" a lot around here.

"Before He Cheats" has fallen off the roof. I go weeks without hearing it, but of course I am not usually there when people get real drunked up.

"Goodbye Earl" is rare anymore, but seems to be a very common first song for karaoke virgins.

Just a small tecnicality here, but the year 2000 was part of the 20th century (years 1-100 is the 1st century, 101-200 is 2nd, etc....). 2001 marks the beginning of the 21st century.

yeah, many people associate the year 2000 with the next century because of the 1999 change to 2000, but Cuey's correct!

The classics are songs that remind people of their parents and grand parents. Songs they grew up with and were branded into their minds at a young age. These are the songs they sing at karaoke because those songs mean something to them. They come from artists with real talent, did not need electronics or FX. They were not writing a song every week in response to producers with only one thing in mind.. greed and money.

There are few songs in this century that will last because another soon hits the waves and is promoted. The only one and I dont know if it is 21st century is Independence Day. This song will be around awhile. Dontcha might.

In this century I quit going to bars that have bands. Country sounds like rock which sounds like pop which sounds like hop. I cant even dance to them. Every new song sounds the same. There is no distinct genre anymore. Talent has been replaced with watts and electrons which can be turned off with a switch.
