Ok first outside gig this year and I missed bass.. I want the JBL 18" powered sub, I notice on Ebay right now I can get one for less than $500. Taking suggestions on powered subs. What is the most bang or oomph for the bucks?

We use a 15-inch Mackie powered sub - got it thru SameDay Music for $790 and it was a blem. I try not to pay full price for anything (and with the amount of equipment I buy, this is really important) One thing about SameDay - they do carry 'seconds' with warranty. Other sites do I believe, as well, but you have to be diligent about checking all the time. Mackie subs out all their tech support now - the one we used is about an hour away and they got our equipment turned around in 2 days. Great guys.

Doing outside shows I won't use anything less than an 18" minimum with at least double the power of the mains.
JBL, QSC, Mackie all make a very nice powered sub. Not so much the JRX from JBL, but the PRX series ROCK! Yorkville also has a nice powered sub, but a little harder to come by in the states if you want to preview them.

Yeah I'd pass on the JRX too. Go for something with a driver VC of 4" and a plywood cab, not MDF.

If you are going used I'm a firm believer in Craigslist for heavy things like this. You can pick it up yourself and save a ton on shipping plus not having to worry about damage. Denver isn't that far from you. I'd look it over daily.

I'm not to sure any front loaded sub can handle the vast expanse of open space well. That being said, without question the Yorkville LS800P will out perform any other self powered sub offered by JBL, QSC and Mackie. I say that from both my personal experience and from reading numerous threads and reviews on the subject on the net. The general feeling by most sound professionals (that have heard them)is that the LS800P is the undisputed heavy weight champion in its class and price range. A few months ago, in preperation of buying new PA gear, I got to do my own side by side comparisons involving the usual contenders The JBL PRX518S, QSC HPR181I, Mackie SWA1801Z and the Yorkville LS800P. I purchased the Yorkies and haven't looked back. Sometimes i wonder why I bought two as usually one will do the job by itself. If you are only going to be using a sub outside, you might want to seriously consider going with a folded horn type sub. Yorkville makes a powered folded horn sub, I believe it is a UCS1P, same 1500 Watts of power like the LS800P but in a folded horn type cabinet. Out of the other speakers mentioned the QSC 181I was a fairly close second. Yorkvilles are a little harder to find, but well worth the search. I've included a link to the Cobra Sound shootout, you might find it interesting. http://www.cobrasound.com/shootout06
