I'm looking for one more or less arranged instrumentally like the one The Dan Band did in the frat comedy "Old School". Here's a Youtube of it (Warning Very Explicit Lyrics!!!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIRiZsDO ... re=related
If you don't care to listen, it goes directly into the chorus from the first verse. No second verse. That second verse is what's throwing the singers off.
If the room is young this is the only version they are interested in singing, and the only version many of them even know. I've never had it sung straight.
There is no Dan Band karaoke version, so if anyone knows of a standard karaoke track without the second verse please let me know. Not only will it help the singers, it will get it over with faster. Although it did go over pretty good Sat. I gotta admit.

I listened to the video. I liked it, but too bad that it's the only one the young ones know. I don't think there IS a shortened version like what you want. Appealing to the manufacturers might help, but I doubt that. I would find someone to come to your show that knows the original version and maybe the crowd will like that. I've never heard of the Dan Band. Is that their schtick? Inserting swear words into old songs?

wow, that's really a .... song...or not... I can't even imagine wanting to sing that, but hey, it's probably the same people who are smitten with Tenacious D and Nine Inch Nails that want to sing that version. What do they call that? Gratuitous cussing? I say 'get a life.' Sorry, just isn't appealing to my comedic side today. I wouldn't even look....sorry, that's all I'll say about that.

Wow... I guess it's official. I must be old. There wasn't anything funny, or nice about that song.
I like the original.
Good luck. I've never even heard of the DAN band.

The Dan Band was probably most famous for the appearance in Old School, they were appearing at a wedding & sang that for the bride & groom.

If a guy puts that song in, you can be assured this is the style they will do it in!

I actually think I've had more young women sing it than guys. That was the case last Sat. The sweetest looking young thing... until she opened her mouth.
But I knew what was coming.
I think I've stumbled on an answer. There's another version other than Bonnie Tyler as karaoke... Nikki French (?). I just checked her Youtube and she doesn't sing the second verse. I'm going to risk a download. Not that big a deal. I think I can get it for 99c.
The Dan Band does a pretty funny version of "You Oughta Know"... but the only thing anyone is interested in doing is "Total Eclipse" because of that movie.

The Nikki French version is completely different, fast pop almost techno'ish'.
Again that was the song done in the movie, no one really knows of them otherwise.

The Dan Band are awesome. Not just funny, but they are a really tight band! Am singing this song this weekend at my birthday (dubbed out vocals for a one time use). Their version of Hold On / Luka is ace!
Also: Big Brother UK, one of the first tasks was endurance karaoke. 3 housemates took it in turns of a few hours (5 ish) to enter a room and sing the Sunfly version of that song over and over and over.
It got quite funny!

Yeah Lonnie I came across that Nikki French techno track too when checking versions. But there is also one that she does pretty straightforward and that's the way one of the downloads sound... as much as I could hear of it.... it's just a snip. We'll see. I'm going to bundle it with a few other things before this weekend.
I try to leave any attitude I may have against certain songs (or versions of them) at the door when I host karaoke. Bu honestly, if someone wants to throw a few f-bombs into any Steinman power-ballad-opera I'm fine with it. Can't think of a more deserving genre.
Just my personal opinion...
I think The Dan Band does better than this though. I listened to a few of their things yesterday and was especially taken with their rendition of "You Oughta Know", which manages to poke fun at the song in general, it's expletives in particular, Alanis Morissette's infamous slurred delivery style, and at the same time delivering a reverent slamming version that far outshines the original. These guys are really good!
