Once in awhile i put on my VFW cap in public. The response I get is awesome. I have never worn it while watching the parade but this year I think I will and salute colors as they pass and stand with pride and wet eyes.

For those that dont know it the protocol is to stand up at 15 paces before they are in front of you. Then hold for 15 paces after they pass. If you are uncovered the hand is held over the heart. If you are wearing a military cap you salute and hold it the same.

I have marched in ceremonies and parades in uniform. With a good band or bagpipes the feelings are forever.

I should like to amend that post. If you are police or fireman or a boy scout or any of those in public service and in uniform you should salute. I have even seen bikers salute.

I recently went to a parade in one of the nearby towns. I was amazed at how many people DID NOT bother to stand when the colors passed. How I wish the general public had the pride in our flag and country, and the patriotism of my parents, or others of my generation. I wonder how these same people would feel if they didn’t have the liberty that our flag represents. I have a grandson in law in Iraq, and I am sure he and his fellow soldiers would be saddened by the apathy of my fellow Americans.

We have a picture in the post of a crowd at a parade. There are maybe 10-15 sitting on the curb. There is an old man in the middle that you can tell it took everything he had to get up out of a wheel chair. He was standing as straight as he could with pain on his face. The saddest part was the young men sitting on their (@$%&#!) and did not even have the courtesy to help him. If I had of been there I would have been screaming.

Thanks to everyone who has served our country in the past, present, and future.

It is a pet peeve of mine when some can't be bothered to salute our flag for a minute. Just the other day I yelled at someone at a major league baseball game that was screwing around during the national anthem.

I still salute the flag during the National Anthem. I was an Eagle Scout, and later in life, served in the military. I personally feel VERY responsible for our country, having served and taken the time to understand our personal and civic rights.

Happy Birthday USA, and congrats to all who have answered the call to duty!

Not to go off tangent here, but probably the ONLY reason I won't be voting for Obama is he was caught not saluting during the national anthem.

I mean, the man is basically applying for the job of the Commander in Chief, and doesn't understand that the salute is the ultimate of leadership and respect to our flag and nation??

Sorry... nope, not for me!

I never was in the military (although I tried to join the Navy, but got rejected for health reasons, I was also a scout, too), but I stand when the colors are presented. My hand over my heart and cover (cap) removed. I even pause in respect to our flag displayed outside my job every morning. We are very lucky indeed to live in such a place. We may not agree with our leaders at all times but our devotion to country should not waiver. Thanks to all veterans and current service members and police and fire personnel. How do other country's citizens respect their flag when presented? Would be an interesting bit of knowledge.

My fervent hope is that it was out of ignorance or because he belongs to that school of thought that interprets the protocol differently. I'll never forget being before a "Soldier of the Month" board when assigned to the 42d MP Group in Heidelberg, Germany: One of my questions presented me with that very scenario, "When in civilian attire, what is the expected protocol of a member of the US Armed Forces when the colors pass in a parade?" I responded that it was appropriate to salute, then the board members got into an argument about whether I was correct, with half claiming that it was appropriate to remove any cover and place one's hand over the heart, and half claiming that I was right. I won Soldier of the Month - I think because they were embarrassed about not being able to come to a consensus on that question. LOL

As being retired military (MP), to me active and retired members are the only ones entitled to salute, not civilians. Civilians are to place their right hand over their heart. If Obama did this then it is what he is supposed to do, if not, then it is disrespectful. Obama is not the Commander-in-Chief. To me, civilians have not earned the right to salute.

flag code for national anthem

the part about Obama... http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/anthem.asp

Note that there are statements that he sometimes does this and sometimes doesn't... either way, not the behavior from someone that is running for PRESIDENT of the U.S.

I always salute the flag, even though modern code says it's only for those in uniform. In my mind, I never left the service of my country.

Okay, flag etiquette is governed by the United States Code, Title 4. A quick look through "Chapter 1 - THE FLAG" reveals this:

Sec. 9. Conduct during hoisting, lowering or passing of flag

During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all persons present except those in uniform should face the flag and stand at attention with the right hand over the heart. Those present in uniform should render the military salute. When not in uniform, men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Aliens should stand at attention. The salute to the flag in a moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes

Emphasis mine.

Notice that it doesn't say "Those present in military uniform...", it merely says uniform. Another section of 4 USC I thought was relevant was this:

Sec. 8. Respect for flag

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations.

Emphasis mine.

burger06.jpgNotice here that 4 USC lumps firemen in with military personnel as far as uniforms are concerned. That pretty much puts the nail in it for me!

So, to make a long answer short, Victor: it would seem that if firefighters are present and in uniform when the colors are presented (or retreated), you should stand at attention and render a salute - just like the military and Boy Scouts do.

I hope this helps, and remember Our Motto: "Everybody Wants Some!"

Dr. Drill.

link

The one to ask is kellyoke...

The oath I took I will carry to the grave. When we bury a fireman I salute them . When they come to a military funeral and durung taps they salute. That is one time when I will salute without a cap on.

Thank all vets and those who put their lifes on the line on a daily basis. I do. The other day a fire engine was sitting in a Safeway parking lot. I jokingly told them they couldnt use the engine for grocery shopping!! I then saluted them and they saluted back.

I’m glad to see that, here on the forum, I am among many who’s views are the same as mine, pertaining to honoring our flag among other things.

Aside from the fact of his total lack of experience, I too do not understand how we, the American people, can even consider a person for the highest office in our country, with his Muslim connections or when he doesn’t always respect our flag, , but there seem to be many that this does not bother. There is something fishy about him and his wife, the way I see it. They now, are doing a lot of talking about how patriotic they are, and how Christian. “Me thinks they doth protest too much!”

I do not have an issue with a black man being in the White House, I may even have voted for Colin Powell if he had ever decided to run. I have no doubt where Mr. Powell’s loyalties lie. Mr. Obama on the other hand is a whole different story.

Thanks to all who have served in the Armed Forces, or a civil servant capacity in our United States of America. Without you, we would not be the great nation we are.

Unfortunatly, I belong to that generation that does not truly appreciate what you have and are doing for our country. In another sad realizaion, my wife (here in the US from Malaysia less than 9 months) is super excited about Independence Day. She went out and bought small flags for all of her co-workers, and put them on their desks. When they came into the office, no-one was excited. They just went on their normal daily routine, and didn't even pay attention.

My wife and I are really disappointed. People here sometimes forget how lucky we are to live in the United States of America.

Have a great and safe weeked all!

- Michael
