...tonight. July 3rd. I've never done a Fourth Of July Eve karaoke job before. I've already told the regulars to get there early, and I'm going to start promptly at 9 so they can get a quick round in hopefully.
We're all expecting to be swamped but dunno. How many of you guys are working tonight? What do you think? How's it been in the past? Both Lonnie and Karen have said that they've been really busy already this week. So if that's any indication...yikes!
BTW most of you know that I start a thread in the morning if there's nothing new up just to gab so feel free to go OT and talk about anything you want cause I don't care...
Oh yeah there is that thread about marathon karaoke in Thailand so this is technically number two this morning...
edit: I tried to put this up with a different title but the new software refused to let me do it It kept insisting that there was something already started on this subject.
Old title: Ive got a bad feeling about...

I'd expect a big crowd. Anytime people don't have to work the next day you can predict a huge crowd.
Now the 4th of July itself I always have a low crowd. We have several suburban festivals that start that day. If people come in it's after the festivals close around midnight. Plus a lot of people have plans with family or friends.
I know what you mean about trying to start a post. Usually if I press submit again it will go, but twice now I couldn't start a topic because it wouldn't let me. Odd

Babs I've got a 4th gig too.. at my new semi-regular quiet country room. They've been taking me first Friday of every month. I asked them "Are you sure you want me on the 4th because I don't mind taking that one off" and they said "Sure let's do it".
I think I'm going to be without a heck of a lot to do that night.

I have to work Friday, Saturday at the bar. Usually when Friday is a low crowd most certainly Saturday will be very busy, but I'm not sure with all that's going on in the area. I'm also doing a Grand Opening for a beer garden Sunday. Outside Yuck ! Rain rain go away !
Then woo hoo a few days off for a little vacation with some friends.
Sorry I didn't mean to get to off topic.

I have two shows tonight. First, at a local independent league baseball game, then at my regular Thursday night spot. No idea if it'll be busy or not, but I'm expecting it won't be, so I'll be happy if it is. I have a regular Friday night DJ gig at my Thursday night spot, and haven't heard one way or the other if they plan to keep me on for tomorrow night. I assume I am, and again, expect to be dead.

It has been much busier than normal this week. Sunday I had a 25 singer round, Monday was a 38 singer round, Tuesday 32 singer round, Wed had 28 singers. Most of these days typically avg about 15-20 singers max.
It could go either way tonight. Since this is a 3 day weekend, people COULD be going out of town after work trying to get in an extra night of partying tonight making it possibly slower than usual. On the other hand many people have the day off tomorrow & will just do their activities tommorrow. The last time the 4th fell on a 3 day weekend was in 05 and it was on a Monday. Before that it was 03 on a Fri. I can't recall how it was thee eve nights.
Typically on nights that people do not have to work the next day I will expect a bigger than normal crowd & tonight fits that criteria.
The 4th itself is generally DEAD until LATE in the evening. Last year it was my host & the bartender until 11:30, then the groups came in in waves. I worked one year it was just me & the bartender. The manager was there as well. She said if it stayed like that until 11 I could go. What happened? 10 to 11 a group of 30 - ALL singers came in. We actually ended up going over time.

I have no idea what's going on. I have Friday night off, woohoo....However, we've had steady thunderstorms for the last 15 hours, and pouring rain...And nobody I know is going to go away this weekend. So, tells me that the bars will be busy. I don't know about the 4th - could be with so many people in town, and the weather forecast to be inclement, could be a busy weekend for most places. Here's hoping (I may even get to go and sing somewhere, which I don't usually do on weekends.)
I have a feeling that the fuel prices have already caused a HUGE change in the way people are vacationing - I planned a "small" gathering for Sunday, invited all my karaoke friends (we're having major big karaoke) and EVERYONE has accepted. So....my thinking that about half would be here was blown out of the water.
Could be that the economy is going to be a good thing for karaoke and bars in general. People have to drown their economic sorrows somewhere, and it's a lot more fun in a bar because misery apparently loves company.

Just like you guys, I'm wondering how the night will be. I usually do my gig on Fridays, but due to the holiday, the club is closed and they scheduled me for Saturday instead. Tomorrow, I'll be at a barbecue being hosted by one of the regulars at the club, and from what I've already heard, everyone from the club has been invited and accepted. Hopefully, with a little "net-working" that day, I'll get a good crowd on Saturday. A lot of people aren't going anywhere due to the gas prices, so that could be a plus for us KJ's during this long holiday weekend, as well as for the rest of the summer months.

I remember all the oldtimers talking about the depression in the 30's. The last thing they gave up was going to the bars and the bootleggers actually had more business.
Even here in Greeley which is a small town the bars are becoming more and local.. People are going to have start getting acquainted with their neighbors and helping each other. Out of necessity they will have to rescind all these laws about livestock such as chickens in town.
This was a great nation when a family was self sufficient and had tame and wild meat in the freezer for the winter. Businesses were local and had control of the economy, not corps that own the congress and local city councils. The pendulum will now swing the other way. The citizens will make this a great nation again and they will not do it with polotics, more laws and bankrupting this country more. They will do it with Faith Hope and Love. With hard work and rescinding all the laws which broke this nation they will succeed.

I hope so! In London, petrol is average £1.20 per litre. That translates to about $10.80 per gallon.

6 String is there still a pub in London called the Whiskey-A-GoGo? We celebrated the 4th of July in Portsmouth one time and everybody there celebrated and partied with us.

I had planned to work on Friday, but owner was deathly against it. So, no issues....it's off! I'll take a group of kids to Fireworks instead and on Saturday I have a family party to do.....MrD

I never heard of Whisky a go go. My brother lives in Portsmouth though, well Gosport, just across the marina opposite the spinnaker tower. There is a big US Navy base in Portsmouth. I should expect our good American mates will be decorating the skies with fireworks tomorrow.

I would expect a bigger crowd than usual simply because more people are sticking closer to home instead of traveling out of town

Tonight, july 3 we have 3 shows for the first time. my partner and i each have our normal shows. and we have a DJ only show going on. the dj show is our first show in a downtown bar here in my home town. tomorow (the 4th) we have a karaoke show there for the first time. when we set it up we expected that the towns 4th fireworks would run till 10:30 at the latest, then people usually flood the downtown..turns out that our town in its obviously patriotic genius has decided that saturday is better. NOW we do not know. I expect a lot of people to be doing private partys, or working around home all day and not go out...im nervous..luckly our town has a HUGE town festival next month. hopefully we can get that friday. it will be great for sure. a couple of the really popular bars charge a cover that night just to keep from over filling.

Show at the baseball game was slow, as usual, until about a half hour or so before I had to leave. Happens every time. My regular Thursday night spot, however, was SLAM-PACKED full of people tonight. It was awesome. Would love to have this crowd every week. Rotation reached around 30-ish, and no one complained. One over-zealous (not to to mention drunk) dude was slightly obnoxious, but nothing that couldn't be handled. Otherwise, a full house and a great time. Hope some of that crowd comes back for seconds...

[font=verdana] I’ve been visiting a little bar about 30 miles out of town for the past couple of weekends, finally managed to catch the owner last Saturday night. He said he already has someone that does karaoke one night a month, but he’d keep me in mind.
Last night I was messing around on my machine, and said to myself, d**n, I am tired of singing to no one! I want an audience, I want other singers, I want to have some fun!! So on impulse I gave this bar owner a call. Talked to him a bit about how many vacationers he had out in his area, etc. When I first made the call, was thinking I would just go do it for nothing, and have some fun. But then remembered if you don’t value yourself/ your show, then you can’t expect other people to. So when he asked how much, knowing that he’s a bit of penny pincher, I quoted him a really low price for the night. He took me up on it, and I will be out there Saturday night. At least I have my foot in the door, and a chance to show him what I can do. I’m sure the crowd will be a lot more in tune with my style of show, then the last one. From what I’ve seen there, they are mostly approaching middle aged and up, a lot of bikers, because he’s a biker himself.. This country gal should do okay.
Just have to make sure I reach down inside and find that fun loving, flirty gal, that used to live in this body, and see if I can bring her out…..

Well, as ususal, I'm a day late. I had a HUGE crowd last night at my "Redneck" gig, but they weren't rednecks. Awesome night for me, but I'm whipped this morning. I am concerned about tonight, though. I've had the owner of the bar that I'm working at tonight offer to cut me loose early once or twice when we've had an off night, but it has always picked up; so I've never actually stopped early. I just don't know what to do about the money in a situation like that; do you discount the price? I guess you'd have to. It's funny, I have contracts which spell out contingencies such as leaving early with my DJ Clients; alas, you could never get a bar owner to sign a contract; so you have to guess.

I get quite annoyed if a bar owner expects that it is my job to make sure people turn up. Ok, I do my bit to encourage people to come, I also just built a good website for people to keep in touch with me to keep em coming back.
Ultimately, if the place is quiet, then it's quiet. That's not your fault, so no way in hell should you take a pay cut. I'd rather go & gig somewhere else..
