It isn't a question of which is best for karaoke, it is what is best for your mixer and mic. "Hi-Z" is a term describing a two-wire, i.e. T-S 1/4" plug to 3-wire plug. This is only used by direct plugins to karaoke players, or by "karaoke mixers". Basically, it is more susceptible to noise. You may have to use that type of cable with some very cheap mics which don't support three-wire connections -- usually those have the wire molded to them, though, and you don't have a choice. If your mics are anywhere near professional-type, then you will want to use the three-wire that some call "Low-z". It would normally be XLR->XLR, though I think you may be able to find some XLR->TRS. I know that most pro mixers support both, but there is no real reason to use the TRS if your mixer supports XLR. |

"Hi-Z" is the cable you would use for a hi-Impediance mic (dynamic) "Lo-Z" is the cable you would use usually for an instrument or a condenser Mic. |

[/font] What is best is what you are using for mics & what your mixer has for inputs - this will determine whether you need low z or high z cables to get optimum performance! |

In my experience, corded professional mics (like the Shure SM-58) are all Low-Z. The Hi-Z mics are mainly for home use. They are very lightweight (never seen one made of metal, only plastic) and I've found their quality is pretty tinny. Also, most Hi-Z mics are hard-wired in that their cords cannot be detached from the mic. If there's a short in the cord - which particularly happens at the base of the microphone - you either have to open up the mic and rewire it or just throw it out altogether. |

All my mics are three plug xlr types but I often use older peavey or yamaha mixers that only have 1/4 inch inputs. I've bought adapters to convert the cords to fit the mixers. They work just fine. You do want to spend a little and get better quality mic cords. Look for cords with heavier gauge (lower number) wire. A couple of years ago I bought a little 30' snake with 6 xlr and 2 1/4 in input/outputs. This really cleaned up the appearance of my shows and cut down on some of the tangle. I run mics, video signal, and monitor signal thru this little snake. You might look at this as well. I run a black power cord close to the snake to power the video and have not had problems with hum or feedback but you do want to watch this. By the way I use fairly cheap mics for Karaoke. |
