Post subject: | The Reopening |
Well our reopening was a big success. We did fri and sat. I will attempt to give a presentaion with a few pics and videos what Shorty's Grill is all about and the bonds we share from the new owner on down. This post covers fri. There are a few characters here and I will give a brief history and introduce them. The first is Dave he new owner. He started as off a customer then a co-owner and now the sole owner. We all have bonds with him as singers. The first video shows him singing to his fiance and indicates a goal met which they both put a lot of effort into. He is the best bar owner singer. Next is Patti. I have known her for at least 5 years. She is a school teacher and has a 4 year old son by the name of Levi. When I call her me and Levi have a ritual we go through . It never varies except for what he is doing. He always answers the phone and with the most formal voice with a Wisconsin twang says Hello Ollie. Levi!!! Waddya doin? Watchin TV. At this point I dont say anything. After 2 or 3 seconds OK You can talk to mommy now.. OK.. She is shown in the video and she is a good singer until about 4 drinks. Fri I got there at 6:30 and parking was full so I backed into handicapped. I hate setting up with a crowd. There were 4 singers there Me my host Dave and Patti. After about 6 songs and we had the crowd worked into a frenzy Dave made a few announcements then sang to his fiance Barb. Listen to the noise of he crowd. This shows how this bar gets in the last hour or two sometimes, nobody including singers care whether it is karaoke singers or dj. Nobody is counting how many times somebody has sung or worried about rules. All they want is fast high energy noise. At this point you can throw all the rules discussed here out the window. Next is Patti singing With this camcorder and internal mics about all you can hear is reverbs off the north wall which is cinder blocks. This is the hardest venue I ever tried to setup. There is a few seconds off crowd video and shows the congestion around the bar. Imagine 4 times the people this shows with a disco type mania. It varies between karaoke and total insanity. The last few seconds is my host doing his thing. I am currently processing 2 videos for sat in the next post. |

Ollie, I feel the same way, for our crowd we will never judge our show by how many songs we do an hour or if a couple of times there is nothing playing for 30 or 45 seconds, if people are having fun they will never notice. Once again, biggest problem is people showing up late and drunk and wanting to sing. And flirting or money will not get them ahead in rotation, although we did make an exception for a young soldier who had just got in from Iraq. Probably won't work for everyone but it has for us, last 7 weeks have been just great. Rudy. |

Yeah I'm impressed with that too. I'm thinking about getting a camera with video capabilities so I can do something like that. Ollie did you shoot that with a camcorder or camera? I've never posted on Youtube before. Did you have to convert to MPEG4? The camera I'm looking at shoots videos in Quicktime... |

This camera is a Canon ZR 950, it is a mini dv. I love it but it has internal mics which I dont like For good uploads of my singers I will have to record them I convert to MPEG2 even that takes a lot of memory.. I finally figured out how to upload videos to my web site. This video was shot with bad lighting most of the light is behind them. Audio isnt real bad the camera wasnt pointed at brick wall. Watch Paul the mngr pinch one on the butt.... The 3 gals to start with worked their butt off fri and up until this sat at about 11;00. This gives them a chance to unwind and become part of the show. The two that joined them are my regs and are awesome singers. The guy that heped his fiance up is Chris He graduated from UNC last spring with a degree in meteorolgy. He just was hired by channel 5 in cheyenne. The first gal up was helping me in the VFW 7 years ago when she was 16.. |

Dave the new owner and his wife was outside for a smoke break and I went out and we had a nice long talk. He appreciated the fact that I held sat open for him all the time he was closed. We will be expanding into the old pizza parlor too which will seat 200-300. I told him my goal was still too move there and make 200-250/night. He mentioned doing some fri nights and I honestly told him we were doing spot gigs at another bar on fri. It is nice to have an open honest relationship and be friends but retain a professional attitude. Greg and I had to sing a lot as there still isnt very many singers. I hate that. I opened the show and got the crowd going with the Right Left Hand but my hit last night was That's Amore.. |
