Where can I get Karaoke statistics? I'm looking for a respectable Short List of songs most requested by singers to KJ's in the english speaking world.

I've been KJ'ing more than five years at a wide variety of venues, I'm a database nerd, and my Short List is amzingly short, with less than 500 entries. Yes! I get requests for songs not on my list all of the time but not as frequently and not across gigs. I'd like to share my popular song list with others!!!

My belief is that you should not have to be a millionaire to build an acceptable Karaoke song library. A successful Karaoke company should have an intelligent selection of songs based on "popular requests" not available prerecored CDG's. With the top 500 most requested songs on high quality CDG's, a KJ could have a respectable and legal library for less than three thousand dollars, I have discovered.

When people request songs not on the list, simply order them from legal sources on the Internet. For instance, you can order 15 of the exact tunes you have been getting requests for through Sound Choice for less than 5 dollars each. My requests are running about 2 to 3 Sound Choice discs a month.

Please don't come back with the Foundation song list etc., we all know that song list is not the top 500. Don't think about what's available on comercial CDGs, Think about actual REQUESTS!!!

The discs holding my my 500 most popular songs fit in a hand bag.

My hobby is marketing, I built a highly successful Karaoke company in less than
6 months. Now I'm hungry for statistics about singers, habits, repetition, etc., etc., wanna grow some more.

Looking to start a new label

This list would never be accurate for all. We've had numerous topics on this very thing & what is hot in one club & gets done to ad nauseum, never even gets a second look at the club next door. The 500 songs you get regularly requested may be the complete opposite of my clubs requests. We get a lot more 70's-90's rock/metal then a ton of country. Others talk about more standards & easy listening in their shows, while others talk they get oldies (50's-60's) in their shows, etc. I couldn't even really have an accurate compilation of the most requested. It also changes from month-month, year-year.
I hear what you are saying, but the Foundations DO get used alot for the older requests. I just buy what people ask for anymore, not what I think they might want.

A lot of karaoke rooms have evolved into specialized styles that cater to certain groups. Each room has it's own personality. I know that's true around here. Songs like Possum Kingdom and Spiderwebs, both sung last night in my room and in Bab's, are essential to my room but probably never done down the street in the country and oldies karaoke room that's close to mine.

I'd like to see what you consider essential georgefm. I will invite you to post a night's worth of singing from your place (or places) on the other thread.

BTW I'm with you on your opinion of SC Foundations and SC in general when it comes to the selections they put on each disc. More than any other company there's a lot of waste unless you absolutely must have everything.

Just my opinion as a part-timer... and I know I'm going to get some disagreement on this one...

I've seen some KJs (in past years) on this forum and on (the now EX) JOLT Forum say that a person could actually run a very successful show with just 1000 of the most popularly sung Karaoke songs. I believe this to be true, because I have been to a show or 2 over the years where the KJ's books were less than 1 inch thick, and they would have a full crowd week after week.

Georgefm, I think what Lonnie says is true.... what's popular at 1 person's show, may not be popular at another show. Also, the popularity of a song varies from region to region (East Coast to West Coast).

quote/s:
"A successful Karaoke company should have an intelligent selection of songs based on 'popular requests' not available prerecored CDG's. With the top 500 most requested songs on high quality CDG's, a KJ could have a respectable and legal library for less than three thousand dollars, I have discovered."

"Please don't come back with the Foundation song list etc., we all know that song list is not the top 500. Don't think about what's available on comercial CDGs, Think about actual REQUESTS!!!"
end quote/s

IMO, the SC Foundation set consists of the most Popular and most Standard (time-tested) songs sung at Karaoke shows across the country. I think most of the KJs here will agree on that.

We've had some past topics here (and in other K-Forums) where we've even discussed "The 10 Most Overdone Songs," and that has varied too. Maybe you should consider this when you compile that "Popular 500" list. Here's mine......

My Way
I Will Survive
Picture
PBTDBL
Summer Nights
Goodbye Earl
Crazy
Turn the Page
The Gambler
I Love Rock and Roll

Here's a Bonus Song:
Happy Birthday ------

I'm into my second decade as a Karaoke Host. Your 500 isn't bad at all. I am CD based, and CARRY about 15,000 songs, with another 9 or 10 at home waiting to be added per request.

What I've found is that MY top requested list is only arounf 350 songs- and here's the kicker- more than 80% of those are included in the SuperCore Collection.

Whether you have these songs on SuperCore or another brand isn't important. If you or someone you know has the full set, you are in luck. Their sets come with SONGBOOK LISTINGS. If you don't have the set, borrow the book from someone who does, or print it offline. There's your short list.

BTW- The SC sets don't contain anywhere NEAR as many of the post popular songs...a LOT of waste per disc.

That may be debateable. Which one is listed first in your books (if you have the SC set). I get alot of singers who ask for the SC version IF I have it.

I have to agree with Joe, for the most bang for your buck, Supercore (which contain the original KJTools) is your best bet. They are in use probably more than any other brand for the most part and have some of the most popular songs on them.

I could cover the better part of many nights with just the Supercore and Big Hitz sets. Both sets contain decent versions of the material and are intelligently packaged by knowledgeable people who really know what's being sung down in the trenches.

But I'd need both.

My Sound Choice requesters are usually seasoned singers who do oldies. And that's definitely a strong suit of that brand.

Of COURSE it's debateable, Lonman. I was only speaking of MY short list in MY venues, as requested. I wasn't generalizing. Also, if a customer requests SC, I have it too. Rarely happens in MY venues though. They actually like more of the SuperCore (highest popularity), or THM, or Zoom, or Chartbuster than Sound Choice.

Might not be that way in my next venue but the five I have now are ALL that way. Go figure....

I agree with Bill in regard to those who DO request Sound Choice, although for oldies, believe it or not, I also get a BUNCH of Music Maestro requests.
