Hi,

I'm looking for a bit of help. I have been reading on this forum for a while now but I normally get all the info I need from reading other peoples posts. The time has come for me to start buying a few toys and I need some help.

Currently I have all my cdg discs converted to mp3+g on my laptop, I'm using a 37" lcd screen for the lyrics connected by hdmi and I had been using a peavey escort amp for the sound ( I really only do parties for friends etc. in houses or small hired rooms)..

At the minute I am looking at a mixer to buy and I have narrowed it down to either a behringer 1024fx or a alesis multimix 8, they are both roughly the same price and I think they should do the trick for what I currently need. Could anyone tell me which would be the better to buy? I like the fact that they are usb and I can plug the laptop straight into them.

The other question I have is about an amp, the amp and speakers I normally use were borrowed. I have a house party to do at the end of the week and I was just going to use my home NAD amp and tanoy speakers. Is there a chance that these could be destroyed with people singing through them, or is there something I can do with the mixer which will prevent this from happening?

I know these questions are probably really stupid, but I don't have a clue.

I should have said that my amp and speakers are home hifi separates, not disco/dj

Cheese - do not use home stereo speakers to sing karaoke- you will ruin them besides them not sounding that good. you would be better of picking up a small inexpensive pair of pro audio speakers.

As far as THOSE 2 mixers I like the Behringer for the use of the SLIDER controls versus the KNOBS on the ALesis - probably couldn't go wrong with either one

thanks for the reply.

The problem is that I don't have the money this month to spend on a decent amp and speakers, the cheapest I have found is about £150 for 100w amp with a pair of speakers but I would guess that the sound will be awful so I thought it might be best to try and make do and then buy a good setup next month.

Would I be able to do anything with the mixer to prevent the speakers from being damaged?

I have quite a good set of tanoy speakers and I wouldn't want to get ruined.


One other question. Are the effects on these mixers what I would need? I have read a lot about getting a mixer that has an effects module but no-one really says what it should have.

I know that Behringer boards come with many effects, 99 for that matter, but some of them are useless. I don't know about the quality of effects. Big brands like yamaha and mackie have fewer effects but should be better according to what i've been reading. Most of the time, you get what you pay for in electronics.

You can opt for Behringer speakers, which are regarded as pretty decent as long as they don't break down. They have a good price point to boot. You can get two B212 for $300.

behringer have a reputation for unreliability, I use the alesus 6 and aside from it being a couple of mic channels short of what I would prefer, its great and the efx are great
I too missed the faders (being ex radio jock) but end of the day, you get used to it...so I would vote Alesis. But I too would reiterate what others do bout home theatre use...live sound is gonna ruin your home theatre system.

steer clear of behringer, try something like a fender passport system

I own both the Alesis Multimix 8 and the Behringer mixer. I think either are fine. The Behringer I own gigs out with a jazz combo on a regular basis and works great.

It's funny what reputations are. On alt.audio.pro.live-sound where live sound pros hang out, Alesis is the one with the terrible reputation. Behringer gear has a pretty good reputation, because a good number of those pros use the DCX2496 or the DEQ2496, and a lot use the EP2500 amp.

I bought the behringer mixer today, cost me £120. I wish it was as cheap hear as it is in America!

I have another question though,. The guy in the shop has offered me a set of behringer b212a speakers, would they be what I'm looking for? He is charging £300 for the pair and he says they are 400w each.

I have been doing a bit of looking about, it seems to be quite a good price but would there be anything else that I could consider buying as an alternative?
