[font=Verdana] I am wondering how many dress up to do their shows; I don’t mean costumes, just dress nicely. Many of the KJ’s I have seen in my area don’t bother much with their appearance or to wear anything special. Also, I have seen more than a few that are so tucked back in a corner that when you walk in you really have to search to find where the KJ is. You just hear a name called to sing, no showmanship on the part of the KJ. One of these is the bar owner, so he could set up however and wherever he pleased. I’m not a ‘prima donna’ but I do believe that the KJ should be able to be picked out the second you walk in the door, both from his attire and the way his roadcase, table etc are situated. I think your showmanship has a lot to do with keeping the crowd there and entertained. Am I right or wrong in my opinions?

I did a show last Saturday night, just a one time thing because their regular KJ had to do a wedding. I received many compliments on the show, although I never really had a large crowd, and even the bar manager mentioned how nice I and my setup looked. I can’t help but wonder if some of these KJ’s have done it for so long that they are kind of burned out and it isn’t any longer fun for them, just another night of work.

I am inclined to agree that some effort should be made. If you are a regular at a club or bar then you are not only your own ambassador but that of the club/bar as well.
Obviously if you rely upon private functions it is very necessary. I havent kj'ed for a long time but it was in a bar and I tended my dress to reflect the pride I felt at being given the opportunity by the hotel owners.
Now that I gig as a singer and do private functions virtually exclusively, I am my own best or worst advertisement, so it is in my best interest to dress according to the gig I am doing

i dress according to the party, sometimes starched western attire, if its a back yard party shorts, Hawaiian shirt ,straw hat, sandals, coral necklace. new years partys i always wear one of my two pimp suits. I thinks sometimes your attire sets the mood and makes you more approachable. i also use props sometimes i have several hats for the patron to wear on certain songs, i even have a shirt that has to arrows on one arrow that points straight up and the other arrow points straight down, the captions or the man, arrow up and the legend arrow down its a great kodak moment shirt. totally agree showmanship is what takes you from average to i am gonna hire this person for all my shows. it certainly can be a deciding factor. .....cal :D

I always try to dress nicely without being overdressed for whatever occasion. The saying "trash in, trash out" comes to mind--if you dress like trash you can pretty much expect to be treated like trash, and likewise if you dress nicely people have a tendency to treat you with more respect.

It isn't only a reflection of the club/bar/function you're playing, it's a direct reflection of you 8)

Oh I'm going to get killed for saying this:

I've had many people tell me that when they go to a karaoke show the KJs usually look like an old drunk guy. LMAO My experience is it is usually an older gentlemen dressed in jeans and a t-shirt.

I don't think there is anything wrong with dressing like the crowd does. That would be what's appropriate. If you are manning the equipment I would think that would make it obvious who is the KJ.

It depends on the night how I dress. Fridays people tend to dress up more in the bar, so I do too. Wed and Sat are more laid back, so you might find me in a hoodie or t-shirt. If it's a private party like a wedding or anniversary of course I dress up.

I'll tell ya though high heals are for the birds if I'm standing for 6 or 7 hours. You'll almost always find me in sneakers. :D

[font=Verdana] Babs, I hear you about the high heels, I wore my regular shoes to get the equipment carried in, and out after the show, but I switched to a nice pair of black 21/2” heels during the show. To be honest, I was slipping out of them when I was behind the KJ Table. I did forget once and walked up to the bar without them, but no one seemed to notice. I do like to dress up a bit, I even dress up when I go down to Johnny’s show on Friday night. I don’t do the skirt thing anymore though, I did that at one of my benefits for the senior residence where my daughter works. I thought a long skirt would be appropriate attire, but when you have to manhandle equipment it’s just a nuisance. Now it’s nice jeans or slacks, and a nice shirt or blouse, sometimes a tank top with a shirt over it. My objective is to dress appropriately for a woman of my mature years, but with sex appeal – not that the sex appeal seems to be working for me. LOL

I took off my shoes once because they were killing me. The bottom of my feet were black at the end of the night. The stage is carpeted, so I didn't think it would be gross. Boy was I wrong.
yeah I'm usually in jeans and a nice shirt too. Being 43 yrs of age I'm trying to be careful also not to fall into dressing to young for my age. You definately won't see me in a belly top. LMAO I don't want any unwanted attention either - if you know what I mean. I swear some guys think just because you work in a bar your easy. I remind them it isn't a strip club it's karaoke.
