I know there are lots of songs out there that I cannot sing in its original key. I use my recording software to increase or decrease by a step or two. How much is too much? I noticed that one song I did sounded way too low compared to the original...but I'm not sure if I felt that way because I had just heard the original and if would have even been noticeable to anyone else. I wasn't sure if there was an "acceptable" change out there or if everyone just increases or decreases to whatever works. Just curious.

every manu makes their songs different. Some work well with key changers, others sound like total junk. IMHO, you'll never get a straight answer about this!

Key changes can be a tricky thing sometimes... especially if there is a lot of background vocals in the song (because then the background vocals will either sound like a warped record (or a 45 played at the 33 speed) or the Chipmonks). As for the music itself not sounding right (to you), that could be in your mind (because you know what the original key sounded like), but it could be true as well (because some songs just NEVER sound right when the key is lowered, but they are fine if you raise the key).

The key change is so that the music can accomodate your vocal (comfort) range. One thing I have noticed on some songs... When I lower the key by more than 1 (1/2 step), the music really sounds off. My "Plan B" is to raise the key 4 or 5 (2 to 2 1/2 steps higher) and sing it an octave lower (of course, this won't work well if the song has background vocals in it). It's all a matter of trial and error until you find your comfort zone with the song you are attempting to sing.

I wouldn't really worry if the listeners can tell the difference. If you try and sing in a key not comfortable for you, they will notice that when the voice cracks or whatever your voice does when you sing out of your range.

Most people I deal with ask for -2 or two half steps. It will sound funny beyond that, I feel. Also, I've never had any one ask to raise the key.

I think it really depends on the song. I have some songs I've brought up or down 6 and they sound fine. Then there are others I'll change just slightly and they sound like crap. If there is a noticable decline in music quality you know you've gone to far. Play by ear -
