Mostly this is just a rant, but im curious what you all think.

about 6 weeks ago I started a new weds night show. the bar is in the basement of a local hotel. I was told that at that point they never had any problems with noise ect. well in 6 weeks time we had 5 really good nights and one that sucked (county fair week). so last week at about 12:20 things were just getting really busy. doors were closed to keep the sound down stairs ect..the owner of the building (bar is leased) comes in screaming at the manager throwing a big fit ect. we shut down and the manager put some money in the juke box, said it was kool and he would have everything fixed by this week. monday night I got a call canceling the show this week from a bar tender i had only met once. then I found out tuesday that the manager had quit over a similar problem saturday night. now tonight I stopped in to talk to the owner but he was not in. when I asked the bar tender she told me she does not expect him to do it anymore.

Is it not our job as entertainers to get people into a bar? to say im irritated is an understatement, even tho I know I can (and will) re book this show at any one of a dozen bars in the area I still think its funny. Its a medium sized town but I know word has gotten around, now I have to get it out again as to where I am now. eergh

so sorry to hear that but you are perfectly correct, you are guilty of doing a good job and sounds like you have what it takes to do an equally good job for a more appreciative person :)

a similar thing happened with my last gig in Portland, Or.

In our case, a neighbor bought her house sight unseen, and was lied to and told that the bar across the stree and down a few houses... was closed or being closed soon. She plunked down her thousand grand, and moved from Phoenix to Portland...

Then my Sat shows, which I'd been doing for THREE YEARS... suddenly confirmed that no the bar was NOT failing and about to be closed, and if she'd asked any of the neighbors, they'd have told her that not only the Sat nights were busy, but just about any night, thanks to some uber great bikers! LOL!

Yeah, similar thing happened to me as well, I had a show at an Eagles Lodge a few years ago. The activities coordinator lined me up with another host on alternating fridays. The coordinator himself also happened to be a kj. My crowds were in the 80-100 range for the time that I was there. Seemed to be going quite well. Even the one waitress that had happened to be working there for over 5 years had said she had never gotten that much in tips before, EVER!. So needless to say I was kinda proud of myself and how things were going.

After a few weeks into the show, my regulars were getting more and more people to come with them, business had gotten to the point that the bar just didn't want to deal with "that many" people. The Eagles is ran very different than any other place i've seen. The elected committee (seven of them) voted me out, even tho the committee themselves had joined in the karaoke parties too. They just didn't want to deal with making money and having to figure out who they were gonna have to donate all the proceeds with I guess.

The activities dude called me personally and gave me the bad news. Told me not to worry, he was impressed with what I did, but if they ever elected a new committee, he would definitely put me as the exclusive kj at the club. But I filled in the nights with another show and all is well,,,very well i might add.

Wow That is the strangest thing I've ever heard.

Supercharged - Not only is it odd I think having the bartender call you to let you know is very rude.

I really did not care who called me, the fact that it was two nights before the show did tinkle me off a bit. the manager was a class act who really did more for the place than anyone has in the last 10 years. he will be getting a club in a few months in town. he had planned to only open thur fri and sat, but has told me that he will do karaoke on weds nights after what he has seen from me, But ONLY if its ME. his new place will be a dance club thur -sat. now that he has seen the energy that can be created with Karaoke his views have changed greatly. the thing i like about that is that his new club will be 2 doors down from the show who likes to go to every bar i do shows at trying to undercut me. he is less than sucessful in this tactic, but I would still like to Kill his show just on the principal. I wouldnt stoop to his level of trying to take it, ill just beat him.

That's great news. When I read your post I was thinking if it was that busy for you there it would be a great place to open a bar. LMAO

Sounds like a win win situation. I bet he ends up having you come in more than Wed. too. The place I'm at started with just Fridays, now I'm Wed. and Sat. too.
This guy seems smart enough to figure out what makes him money. Good luck !
