Wedge Speaker Enclosure (for TV Monitor)

Post subject:  Wedge Speaker Enclosure (for TV Monitor)
In the monitor stand thread, someone (Elvis) mentioned the method of hiding the monitor in a wedge speaker enclosure. I was willing to sacrifice one of my Kustom KPC10s in the effort, but it is pressboard and not really a candidate to take apart.

Does anyone know where you can buy just empty speaker cases? I have searched the net and only found volume suppliers.

Ebay sells the new empty enclosures, But I had a freind in a music store that got me one that had a blown speaker in it for $50.00. The new ebay ones are about 69.00

Any good sound shop should have empty boxes. Check out your local
car stereo shop or if so inclined get out the saw and build it yourself.
That way you can custom design it for what ever you need.
I have thought about doing that and including the monitor speaker
but not sure if the magnets would mess up the video.

Nice ideas, but I really like the "not obvious" part about the monitor hidden in the enclosure.

I will try an audio store and maybe a pawn shop and see if I can find stuff.

It might be possible to have a local woodworker/cabinet maker build you a custom enclosure for you monitor, rather than purchasing something that might work

Ja Mac in Portland made his own speakers cabinets... he offered the wedge monitor speaker cabinet for the same price as his regular rectangular ones!

He mentioned to me when I moved back here that for shipping, he's send the woofer speaker separate. (they've been damaged in shipment if installed.) I'm sure he'd give you a quote on what you're looking for!

With the price of shipping speaker cabinets these days wouldn't building your own cabinet be an option? It really isn't hard to do at all with a few basic tools. Grab a sheet of Baltic birch and have at it. I have actually considered making precut speaker box kits to cut down on shipping costs. I wonder if there would be a market for them. Mcky, I have some left over Baltic birch around here from some three way cabinets I just built for a customer. Give me an idea of your dimensions and I'll see if I have enough for a simple wedge project.

yeah but "one I made myself" doesnt have quite the name dropping effect of sacrificing one of my Kustom KPC10s

What was I thinking. Come to think of it I think I have some cabinet badges around here.....um what make would you like it to be. I think I have some Peavey , Carvin and I think even a couple of JBL and EV logo's around here somewhere. Of course the price of the wood goes up if either of the last two choices are used. I could even use particle board instead of Baltic birch just like the store bought cabinets if so desired. :lol:

Thanks Jim, but I am extremely klutzy when it comes to that type of thing. I might be able to get my friend Phatman to do it -- he just built a custom karaoke rack/desk for the permanent install of karaoke equipment at my service club.

Can you explain why Baltic Birch, if I talk to him about it?

Baltic birch is popular with cabinet makers because of its strength, edge quality, void free, light weight, doesn't tend to split and appearance. I usually use "B" grade which is very nice with no football patches. I also usually use 5/8's (11 ply) when making upper type cabinets and 3/4 (13 ply) when making lower. There is also a new type out around this area they call "thick" veneer, where the inner veneers are normal thickness and the the two outside surface veneers are thicker. A cabinet made from Baltic birch is usually stronger and probably less than half the weight of a cabinet made with particle board. Your upper level speaker cabinets are almost always made using this wood. It costs more than regular plywood but is well worth the price.

Sounds like a good candidate for a mixer rack too.. I made one with particle board and it was so heavy I didnt even use it. Would 11 ply be sturdy enough?

It would work just fine. You would want to use 1X1 on all your joints with a good quality wood glue. I always brace all my joints with 1X1, glue in and use brads or small finish nails (16 or 18 gage) to hold it together while the glue dry's. The added weight and cost of 1X1 is negligible. Brush on or roll on truck box liner works for a good tough surface or carpet if you like.
