[font=Verdana] I subbed for a friend that's a local KJ on the 19th of last month because he had to do a wedding. He does Friday and Saturday night at this club. The manager called me a couple of days ago, and booked me for the Friday the 15th. Really made me feel good that I am the one she called. I would love to have the gig, but like I said he's a friend.

Still looking for that permanent gig though, at least one a week. Most of the KJ's in my area don't really put on much of a show, little if any interaction with the crowd, and although they claim to have thousands and thousands of songs, that isn’t represented in their books. If I could just get some bar owners to give me a chance I don't think I would have a problem. There's one bar not far from me that would be a great gig, but the owner is a truck driver, gone most of the time. He has his own karaoke equipment. If you want to sing, the bartender has to come over and cue up the song for you. Needless to say this place is not known for its karaoke. I have had several of the mature patrons at my son's show ask me to get a gig locally because in their opinion his is to noisy and they don't like some of the songs the younger crowd sings, so I know I could draw a crowd if I could just get my foot in the door.

Good job!! For that permanent gig do not be too anxious. Have several talks with the owner and make sure his goals and yours are relatively the same. These are not formal consults but two adults casually talking at the bar and getting to know each other. This includes mngr and staff. If you are doing spot gigs then go in 30 min early and talk to staff and customers. Does the bar have a good following of regulars and last but not least are the drink prices competitive?

If the owner is ready to commit and receptive to your ideas and does not interfere in your format or show then it might be a go!!!

These simple steps eliminate all the problems that some here have with bar owners. I currently work with (notice I say with) two bar owners now that are very business savvy and have run other successful businesses.

In my reg gig with a new owner (he was a co-owner but bought out to be a sole owner) is adding on another room which will be karaoke only with stage and dance floor. I have bugged him about this for 6 months and tell him my goal is packing it out and making 200-250/night. He and I both know it is attainable. With seating cap of 100 we z out about $2500 sat so with more room it will increase.
