One week on from losing our dog the weirdest thing has occured.
I got out of the car this afternoon after going to the supermarket and there on the driveway was a black cat.
Of course I spoke to it, as I do all animals...she followed me inside, went to every area that our dog used to lie (the area in the living room where her basket used to be, the area by our bed where her bed used to be...she seemed to acknowledge these places (our dog used to chase any cats that dared to set foot on her ground).
She made herself totally at home for a couple of hours, with a snack and a drink of milk...then decided it was time to go outside.
Husband arrived home from a days climbing to find her sitting waiting on the back step...he didnt realise we had already been introduced.
So in she came again and had a little more to eat and spread a little more love then went away again just before we had dinner.
She has just arrived back again to check up on us before leaving I guess to go back to her own home.
Its weird, none of us are cat people...yeah I know the whole thing bout witches and black cats...thing is, a witch's familiar can be any animal at all...yet here this little black cat just marches into our lives to spread a little love...lying on the carpet, chin between paws looking up at me just like my dog used to and in exactly the same place while I prepared dinner...reincarnation?

That's a cool story Vicki! It may very well be a case of reincarnation. I know all this sounds silly and stupid to most people, but I've come across too many instances like this to deny the possible implications. Animals are very empathetic and who knows for sure what they are picking up on.

I don’t know about reincarnation, from your story Vicki, it sounds like this is an adult cat, and you lost your dog a short time ago. I do know one thing for certain , some animals have a special connection to people that are going through something difficult.
My story, I had a black Shepherd mix named Sheba. I loved that dog, she had seen me through a very painful divorce. When the tears would come she would put her front feet on my lap and her head on my shoulder. It may sound silly to some, but I really felt she understood what I was going through. I had to give her up when I was in Massachusetts, to a lady that I worked with who had 3 teen age daughters. She took to her new family very well and loved them all equally. One of the girls became pregnant and Sheba pretty much ignored the rest of them and gave all her attention to this one girl. The girl miscarried at about 3 months and Sheba was right with her through the mourning process. Once the girl was back on her feet, Sheba went back to being the whole family’s dog again.
I think some of it is whether you live with your dog, or after they are out of the cute puppy stage, they wind up on a chain in the back yard with very little human contact other than receiving their food and water and an occasional pat on the head. When your dog has constant human contact they are very tuned into your feelings.
This doesn't apply to your experience with the cat, as she belongs to someone else, but I have wondered if angels can take animal form to help us through our hard times..
My deepest sympathy in the loss of your pet. I am going to have to face that pretty soon. My older dog, Sassy, will be 15 next February. She is blind, nearly deaf, and I have noticed in the past year a lot of stiffness in her legs and back. I have had her since she was weaned and it is going to be devastating to say goodbye. We have been very close companions for all these years.

Morgan sorry to hear about you dog. I know what it is to
lose a loving pet, and had an experience like yours a few
months ago.
We had 6 Siberian Husky's and lost three of them in Jan 08 due to a bad bout with Distemper.
One of them was my wife's favorite a big red one that weighed about
100 lbs and use to sit on her lap in the recliner.
After she (her name was Redd) died my wife was heartbroken
even though we still had 3 of the 6. About 6 weeks after Redd
died a black and white Siberian Husky showed up on our doorstep
no one knew where it came from as I asked around and even
posted notices around our area. She stayed for a few days and
then as suddenly as she appeared she jumped the back fence and
was gone. We never have seen her in the area again.
I think that the universe knows when you need something and
sends it to you for help. This dog helped my wife through the sad
times and then it was time for her to go and help someone else.
I think this kitty was sent to you for your enjoyment for a time
and has helped you through the rough spot.

this morning at 8am there was a meow outside our bedroom window...steve heard it as he sleeps closest to the window. I went to the living room door and called "black cat" and she came bounding through, straight to the bedroom and has had a sleep on the bed with us (its 9am now) and has just followed me into the living room and kitchen to get breakfast underway.
Thing is how did she know what window to make the noise under?
I have always hated having animals on the bed but she wasnt intrusive...found a nice little hollow between the two of us and cuddled down.
Yes she is adult but maybe bout 3-6months and seems to want to spread her love equally between the three members of the family. She is small and quite elegant and has just finished a breakfast of beef casserole

Dusty I loved your story my dog Lou (the previous one before Murphy) was like that...she came into my life at a particularly difficult time...Adam was just a few months old. In a lot of ways she took over the care of the baby...standing over him when he was lying on the floor...she hated travelling in a car, but so long as the baby was in the carseat she would get in and curl up beside him

Wolfy I agree, she is here for but a short time...but I think I will get some kitty biscuits and some meat so as she feels at home during her visits. I am happy for her to come and go as she likes...but its so weird, most cats are hesitant and jumpy to begin with...this is not the case with black-cat

Cats are wonderful animals. I'm glad she has come into your lives.
The funny thing is usually cats that have no human contact in the first six weeks of their lives are forever ferril (wild)cats. So I suspect this kitty has had some human communication.
I love that it is a black cat - so fitting !
I am also sorry for your loss. It is hard to deal with the loss of a family pet.

hey Babs yes Steve is decidedly freaked out...he adores the cat but still looks at her like she is a witch's cat...its odd though...lying on the bed she didnt lie like a cat she lay flat out with her head on her paws and her tail out instead of curled round. When I got up to use the bathroom, she sat at the door like the dog used to do...she would sit there until I had finished my shower or whatever.

I'm allergic to cats but I have a cat story.
My cousin had a big garfield cat named sammy, well I was driving past my cousins house and sammy ran write out in front of me(he was probably thinking I was stopping there). I slammed on the brakes and he ran up into the yard,I parked the car and chased him into the house scolding him.
The next week I was over there playing cards at the kitchen table which looks out at the road, sammy was headed for the road but this time and everytime after our encounter he would get to the road, stop, look left, right, left, right, and left again before crossing the road.
I really don't know how I missed him that day with the car, I told my cousin it must be that 9 lives thing.
Sorry for your loss its always hard to say goodbye (I don't like the word pet) to our four legged family members.I'm sure if there was a topic (PET STORIES) the thread would last forever.

that is one cool story. I have a story with similarities...except I did run over the cat...it was a big black and white cat called monday...he had attached himself to the guy who's house I flatted in. Monday and I got on very well...but he had a trick...if he didnt like someone (he didnt like Rob's girlfriend...neither did I but I digress) he would lie in the middle of the driveway and not shift so they couldnt drive their car in. He would always shift for me and Rob...so it never occurred to me that the lump I backed over this particular day was Monday. My wheel went up and over something quite substantial. With a sick feeling I stopped and opened the door to the car just in time to see Monday stagger under the house. I called and called him but he wouldnt come out...I had to be at work...Dead air on radio is unacceptable even if you have run over a cat.
So when I went home that evening it was to explain to Rob that I had probably killed his cat. To cut a long story short the cat arrived inside the next night seemingly no worse for wear, except that he hated the sight of me and would hissss and spit and run out of the room whenever I was there.
This went on for weeks until we all agreed to leave monday inside one afternoon and everyone stay out till well after I had been there for a while.
Monday was shut in the kitchen and I arrived home...he wasnt best pleased to see me and did his normal hissing. So I just sat on the couch and explained that it wasnt all my fault...he had to take some of the blame. 3 hours later we had a truce and although never the best of friends again...I was certainly placed above Rob's g/f again in the pecking order

It seems this kitty has sensed the lingering energy of your dog, and your energy as well. My own religious background sort of frowns on all of this, but after seeing and experiencing things, I must acknowledge that other powers and energies play a role in our lives. I was outside letting the dog (spring mounted bark machine) do her toilet. All at once, she runs and cowers by the door shaking. I then feel a cold nudge on my elbow. I turn and see that a deer has come up behind me and is just standing there unafraid. I talk to it and it just stands there wiggling its ears like he understood me. A native American friend I related the story to, said that the deer is my spirit guide. He offered some tobacco in a ritual for me to become attuned to my spirit guide. He said a great honor had been bestowed on me. Deer just don't walk out of the woods and hang out.

While I'm not a cat person either Vicki (not to mention I'm terribly allergic to them), there ocassionally comes along a cat that's just got that something extra, (no, I'm not talking about a male stray), but I am talking about cats I've been around that really seem to like people and wish to interact and warm up to them.. This from ALL I've seen given a cats inherent independent disposition is far from the norm however.. but ocassionally a cat is more receptive and sensitive to people like dogs, yet, people that've never had birds would be AMAZED at how a bird will warm up to it's owner too if given the time and attention..While it's not common (to my knowledge) for cats to pick people they don't know and warm right up, I think alot has to do with the cross-breeding because I've not seen too many pedigreed cats that are this receptive to people, but they do exist..
But here's what I also think. This cat knew and recognized the scent of your dog, might've been afraid of the dog, and knows the dog is no longer around and is quite curious !
btw, I have two jet black cats living out front (I try to get along with the neighbors who feed and let the cats stay on the porch, I suppose it's a better place than the common hall where I'd have to be living on benedryl due to the dander in a non-ventillated alcove). I have no fear of black cats, no superstitious belief, but if course I was born on a friday the 13th, and my parents had a black cat.. Not many of us consider "friday the 13th" a lucky day ! but I do..
Hopefully you have a new pet. Sounds like a cool cat ! If I didn't have such a nasty allergy I'd probably get a cat like Babs has.. You look at those Canadian Sphinx hairless, and how can you not laugh at those little Martian looking faces.. I need a pet that can make me laugh.. I get tired of scrolling back having to reread my posts for cheap thrills. OK, back on tour.
*I'm not a big one for ESP, or paranormal activity, but animals DO in fact sense things and for all you know, this cat might know just what's going on, and that you have a vacancy and need a companion*
I used to sit out on womens porches, follow them around but I never had much luck.
