We have a fairly heavy population of Hispanics in our area, so I bought the Tropical Zone Super CDG set for them. They get used intermittently. Last night I was commissioned to do a private party for a Hispanic family reunion. None of them had ever done karaoke before. Even with the language barrier, it went off without a hitch.

I don't speak ANY Spanish, but I was able to memorize three Spanish songs from the bar. They were shy, at first, then I sang two of the Spanish songs and they took over from there. (Picture their faces when a "white boy" gets up there to belt out Vicente Fernandez. :shock:) They were very much in to it. And I got the fee and a very generous tip.

Do any of you have karaoke in other languages? Does it get used?

Ha… I have the very same disc.

I don’t do karaoke weekly, just intermittently when asked for parties/picnics.

I got it for Spanish in-laws who would frequent my music room, but since the wife and I kinda split up, not so much anymore.

I was asked to DJ one of their relatives’ family reunion, so I though it’d work well, but I don’t even think they knew I had karaoke…

Anyways, that never materialized, but it’s still a good to have around.

I have a feeling someday it’ll come in handy should I pursue work; I have a feeling I’m the only one around with that disc.

I learned a few Spanish songs and used to sing them at a Mexican restaurant karaoke place. My pronunciation wasn't perfect, but they appreciated the effort...and it got me the nickname of "the white Mexican."

Where I come from; it is normal to see song collection in 3 diffrent languages. Some place have 5 languages.

But tonight, I will be at a wedding where karaoke will be mostly mandarin.

I have a lot of spanish songs, but keep them in a seperate book because they don't get used much. :D

I don't have any different languages for my current club, never had a need or demand for them. When I was doing more mobile shows, I had a couple Mexican restaurants/lounges that I needed a heavier Spanish/Latino & bought a couple of sets, can't remember the brand but it consisted of like 30 discs & got used quite a bit. Also had some individual discs for specific requests as well.

You guys are too funny!

Being in hawaii, we have 500 Spanish karaoke tracks, also Portugese, Italian, African, German, and a few japanese songs.

Thing is, although we have tourists from all over the world visiting daily (75k), the bar/restaurant owners and i decided to NOT put those songs in the books because it has a tendency to turn away MOST, if not all, the customers after the 3rd foreign language song.

We tried it for 6 months and realized not only did it turn-off the english speaking crowd, but learned that groups of foreign vistors 'take over' the karaoke show by submitting multiple-multiple song requests in their language...and worse, DON'T tip the waitstaff or bartenders. I re-did the books during an update and removed 99% of the foreign language from the main books a while back. no complaints. I still offer sukiyaki in japanese, and a few popular spanish and german upbeat songs.

I have successfully done private gigs with the spanish collection over the years. Learning a few salsa songs is definately a good idea, as it gets the crowd dancing while you're singing! Cool way to hype a show! :wink: Aloha. J.R.

I've got Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Celtic, Hungarian ( one of the nation's biggest populations is in my area) and a real biggie here in NJ- GREEK. They ALL get used!

I am not of Latin origin but like some of the music because of the beat--plus my brother married a woman from Mexico so I grew up with alot of the traditional songs. As I participate in karaoke as a thrill sport, I thought it would add some extra adrenaline to try to learn some Shakira songs en espanol. Plus, while Shakira writes some beautiful melodies, sometimes her lyrics are bizarre and it is better not to know what she is saying. So I have done "Moscas En La Casa" and "Hay Amores." They drop like a rock so I only do them rarely and as a last song when the crowd is mostly gone. People have commented that they can't follow along when they don't know what I am saying. So I was excited when our new karaoke business- to-be got the prospect of a Mexican Restaurant/Lounge--at last appreciators of Latin songs--but before I spent the bucks on the Tropical Zone collection, I asked the owner if there would be a demand for songs in Spanish. She almost panicked--"No No--American! Country Western and maybe a little Pop!" She did say I could throw in some Shakira and Ricky Martin and a few others that "the Americans would know." So I guess all the anti-immigration furor lately has taken a toll. But you know, everyone likes "La Bamba." Go figure.
