I don't know if I do great songs, but I do a lot of them no one else does. But particularly on the distaff side, I wonder why I never hear:[pre] One Way Ticket (Because I Can) -- Leann Rimes
Bye Bye -- Jo Dee Messina
[/pre]Both are tremendous songs that I think would have great appeal. And they were huge #1 hits.

Is it because the songs are difficult? I know there are some songs (fewer as time goes on) that I try and then realize, "No way can I do that one!" Is that why you don't hear them?

So does anyone have some great and popular songs that they think ought be done but never hear?

A few songs I sing, that I've NEVER heard anyone else - which is a shame because I love to hear different interpretations of how to sing a song - mine are not the same as the released single:

They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul
Robbie Williams - Me An My Monkey
Robbie Williams - Ghosts
Metallica - Hero Of The Day

Oh, I could write a book on this topic! Then I could write another book on the topic of "great songs nobody does because they're not available on any karaoke discs!" (at least not yet) Go to Sound Choice's forum and you'll see there are a LOT of songs that we have been asking for...

I hear That's Amore sometimes, and The Summer Wind every once in a while, but the rest of those, never. Karyoker, have you ever sung Gene Watson's Memories to Burn? That's a good song and available through Chartbuster's now.

I just picked up a new Sinatra disc, JTG377, so hopefully will be doing some lesser performed Sinatra in the near future!

I just started singing Lonely Teardrops by Jackie Wilson. It's very high and that's probably why not many people sing it. I have to drop it 3-4 half steps. I've never heard anyone sing Madman Across the Water or Levon. I don't think I've ever heard anyone other than myself sing Kiss and Say Goodbye by The Manhattans. Suite Madam Blue is another one that I like and sing that I've never heard anyone sing.

funny what gets sung at different parts of the country.

down here Bye, bye gets sung almost every night and the weight gets sung at least a couple times a month.

the songs i think are great that not too many folks do are

John Mayer - "Daughters"
Rodney Crowell - "Earthbound"
Shawn Mullins - "Lullaby" (i generally do this one at the end of the night)

there's lots more, but i don't wanna take over the thread.....except to say, Hey Babs! If the Cubs make it to the World Series, I'll be comin' ta see ya!!!!

These two we hear quite a bit around here. Actually, the one is a fellow who does lots of old George Jones, Gene Watson, etc.

Holly Holy Neil Diamond

I take it you have never sang karaoke in Florida, then. It's practically the state karaoke song.

Quote:
Independence Day Martina McBride

We have one woman who *nails* this one. Not to mention "Concrete Angel", which is another good song.

Another side issue is - WHY are these songs 'great' in your opinion. I haven't really seen any song listed that would really get me excited to hear.
As far as listing them, there are FAR too many that do not get done to even begin to start - again my opinion only, most of the 80's butt rock! We do get our share of the 80's metal/hair bands, but there are several more that haven't been touched.

But out of the ones that ARE listed above, several get done here.
Bye Bye, Suite Madam Blue, The Weight (just done last night), Hero Of The Day, Levon, Holly Holy, Lullaby (used to get done nightly, not so much anymore).

I've done Holly Holy a few times. my voice leands well to Neil Diamond, however most of my patrons do not.
AS A host I feel it is important to choose good songs that others will not. I don't want to take somebody elses song.

Bang a gong by T Rex is a favorite of mine. Snoopy Vs Red Barron is a good one too that rarely gets done. i started doing it at one place thinking I had never heard it done. two weeks later a customer came into another place and put it in..odd, but i was happy to have somebody else doing it. I get sick of some of those songs we hear every night like Redneck Woman and John deere green.

I'm lucky, because if I feel a song is being neglected, I tend to ask my partner to sing it, if I can’t.

I do remember in the early days of my karaoke experience I used to read every book in detail searching for two specific songs: Independent Love Song – Scarlet and Trouble – Shampoo

I never found them, and I’m still yet to find them at any other karaoke other than mine. No one has ever noticed them, (or at least they are yet to sung) and I must confess I still feel a little sadness that these two songs have become lost in the depths of the songbook.

PS. My partner sings…. They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul

OK, let's see which of these on your lists I've heard people sing:

"The Summer Wind" (there's one guy around here who sings it a lot), "Holly Holy", I think I remember hearing someone sing "Independence Day", I'm trying to think whether I've heard anyone do "That's Amore" or not--I think someone did once, "Levon", I think I remember someone doing "Kiss and Say Goodbye", and I've sung "Bang a Gong"--that's about it for the ones on your lists. "Suite Madame Blue" is a great song--I'd love to hear someone sing that! *singing thru' it in my head to see if it would work w/me singing it*

Pflugerville, I _love_ John Mayer (and he put on a GREAT show here in St. Louis in July!), but I don't think I can sing any of his songs--possibly if I did 'em in a different key, though? I'll have to think about that. I did hear 2 of his songs in a live band karaoke venue once--one guy did "Why Georgia" and another did "No Such Thing" (which is one of my favorites of his).

musical tastes are about as personal as you can get... there are thousands and thousands of songs. There are so many great "forgotten" songs that until I hear someone else sing it I say---WOW that's a great song and I'll have to try it!
I found out that each venue has it's own "musical tastes" and you may never hear a song sang in one place but around the corner it's sung everyweek ...crazy !!!!

I use to have a guy come in every week and sing some of the greatest 80's rock stuff and he nailed them every week ....... off hand can't think of the names but at the time it was REFRESHING to hear them. Now he has a girlfriend who lives the other direction so I don't see him anymore ..oh well

It's funny...some of the songs listed above I have heard quite often around here! (Definitely "Summer Wind", "That's Amore" and "Levon").
There's so many great songs to choose from, I like to throw an unusual one just to mix things up, and people seem to enjoy that.

Some of my favorite "lost" songs:

"When I see You Smile" - Bad English
"The Stroke"-Billy Squier
"Just What I Needed"-The Cars
"Turning Japanese"-The Vapors

We can hear "She Stopped Loving Him Today" and Hank Snow several times in one night where we are. The host used to do "California Sun" by the Venturas and have everyone out on the floor shaking their butts but then the line dancers invaded and now it is mostly country ballad time.

I want to study The Lonman as to how he attracts younger people who dance and do newer songs. I think it is a good combination because you get a crowd but the singing line isn't horrendous. But it is difficult for the host to sustain that when the better singers all want to show off their note holding on slow ballads. Speaking of which--the boyfriend always wanted to do "This Night" by Billy Joel and finally Zoom came out with it. Not sure its a crowd pleaser but he loves it. I like "Hell" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers, myself.

That's Amore & Summerwind are both sung every time at one venue I play at.

Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac

Most Guns 'n' Roses songs are impossible for regular human males to sing, so I only experience the occasional slaughter of Sweet Child O Mine & Knocking On Heaven's Door. A woman at my last gig sang it & dedicated it to her husband who had just been sent to jail. I'm assuming he must have been a vocal coach..

Black Dog - Led Zepplin - Same reason as for GnR I suppose.

The thing is the younger crowd DON'T do newer songs. There songs of choice are from the 70-90's as a rule. And most of it is rock/metal/thrash. We do still get our country singers too. But having a nice big dance floor & a system that sounds like a dance club helps.

Singing line, I am assuming you mean the rotation? The rotations can go anywhere from 1-2 hours from the point you walk off stage to the pont of your next song.

We get alot of good singers, very few ballads as a rule. There have been nights where the crowd wouldn't sing a fast song if I paid them. This would be one of the rare times i'd interject & sing something upbeat just to change pace.

We get those two done often along with Patience, I Used To Love Her, Welcome To The Jungle & You Could Be Mine. Novemeber Rain & Paradise City get done on a rare occasion. Some do them quite well, others do butcher, but as long as they are having fun!

I have a couple of ladies who sing "Paradise City" and "Sweet Child Of Mine" so well that the guys pretty much have backed off them.

As far as guys singing Guns N Roses, I special ordered "November Rain" for a regular guy last year (remember I'm building my library and don't have a lot compared to most of you.)

It was a lapse of memory on my part. I forgot how long and boring that one is. Just about the time that I was literally going to shoot myself he stopped coming in. Whew! Hasn't been done since. The others aren't touching it, having experienced it enough already. ;)

Of the others mentioned... lessee... "Bye Bye" has been sung some, but not a lot. Same with "Lullaby." It's not a Sinatra or Neil Diamond room (other than "Sweet Caroline" of course) so none of them hardly ever get sung.

I sung "Turning Japanese" early on a Saturday once. Used to do it in a band. It was slow and it was just for fill because I didn't think anyone in my mostly under 30 room would even notice. To my surprise, it got a great reaction!

I asked one of my kids about it the next day, and I guess it was featured in a Chris Farley movie or something. As it turns out they all were more familiar with it than my own age group. So you never know!

As far as material nobody does that I'd like to hear done, and this is sticking with the age group of the room, I guess I'd like to see the guys branch out a little more and into more melodic, traditional sounding bands like Matchbox 20 and Coldplay. But that's because I'm old probably. So I guess I'll have to get off my butt and work up "3 AM" and "Speed Of Sound" myself if I want to hear them.
