What are your favorite songs that you sing regularly and that you love?
These are songs you love to sing and that the crowd enjoys when you sing them and gives you love in return.
A few of mine are:
Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me-Elton John
Just The Way You Are-Billy Joel
It's Now Or Never-Elvis
Unchained Melody-The Righteous Brothers
Kiss And Say Goodbye-The Manhattans

These are some of the ones I get the most requests for and sing when requested, not necessarily my favorites - although they used to be .
Kryptonite - 3 Doors Down
Hemmorhage - Fuel
Bodies - Drowning Pool
Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
Black - Pearl Jam
For WHom The Bells Toll - Metallica
Plush - Stone Temple Pilots

The songs I love are the songs that get the best reaction from the room, and those are things like "Yeah" - Usher and "Low" - Flo Rida.
If, and this is speaking as a KJ now and not a paying customer, you sing something that you truly love but it doesn't grab them by the balls, you've just wasted your time and theirs.

Nah disagree with this. Lots of people sing for themselves, if THEY are having fun, then that's all that matters IMO. I know when (like I ever really get THAT chance) I go out, I am singing something because I want to sing. If the crowd doesn't respond, no big deal to me. Sometimes I try to sing for the crowd, sometimes I just want to sing.

Lonnie, maybe I should have been a little more specific. I'm talking as a KJ host not as a customer. I feel that I'm getting paid to provide karaoke to the singers and entertain if I ever sing myself. I think that's the same way you feel isn't it?
So anyway here's a personal example. One of my favorite songs to sing is "Whenever You Come Around" - Vince Gill. I've done it in bands since it came out. But whenever I've sung it as karaoke it's put the room to sleep. Then it's no fun for me either. So I never sing it when hosting.
Well almost never. Once in a while late on a Saturday night for the ladies on the slot machines.

I agree with what Lonnie said. Bill, I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say here. Are you saying that as a KJ, if you (the KJ) sing something that you truly love...? If so, then I guess I can agree with your comment. If you're making this comment as a KJ who is observing the singers, then who can really say whose time has been wasted? Most singers don't think in those terms. They are either looking for some kind of reaction from the audience (other than dead silence when they've finished), or they are performing for themselves (without caring what the audience thinks or does). They might feel upset or put off if they don't get a response from the audience, but I don't think any singer has ever thought (or felt) that they have wasted their time on stage. Remember, it's up to the singers/customers to decide what he/she/they want to sing. You ARE doing your part (as you stated) by providing the Karaoke to the singers. Any entertaining that you do is just a part of your show. Not every singer is entertaining up there (on the stage), but that still doesn't mean that they didn't have their moment of fun.
OK... that being said, here are some of my favorites (which I love to sing):
The Pussycat Song - Connie Vannett
Bring Him Home - From Les Miserables
Mister Cellophane - From Chicago
Henry VIII - Herman's Hermits

Actually no I feel differently. I am there to provide a sevice for the customers that want to sing. What they sing is completely up to them, would I like for them to sing songs the crowd will always get into - sure, is that going to happen, no - not unless you specifically edit the book to only list the crowd pleasers (which again could be debated on which those may be).
I am there to make sure people have fun, that includes the singer that is on stage - whether they are singing a get out of your chair dance crowd pleaser or the where's the gun I want to put a bullet in my head song. If the singer is having fun singing what they are singing then I am happy. As for the crowd, sometimes they need to grit their teeth as well & it will be over in 3-4 minutes usually. There are some 'crowd pleasers' that get overdone that I wish would just go away, but the people singing & supporters of the show are why i'm there in the first place.
BTW Whenever You Come Around, when it gets sung, especially on the weekends, the dance floor is packed usually.

No I was talking about me singing when hosting. What I sing. This is not directed to the singers in the room. They are not getting paid to entertain. I am.
The problem is I keep forgetting that this forum has participation from both KJs and singers. I keep thinking that it's just us KJs talking shop when that's only a part of what's going on in here.
After reading what Lonnie just said before I got this up maybe I don't think about my role as KJ the same way as the rest of you.

That's what the KJ forum is for, but most of the members in that one just post here anyway as they want the perspective of the singer oftentimes as well.

That's been my experience with the song in bands too.
It may have something to do with when the karaoke room is real busy I'm usually not singing....
But some nights I can't resist...

So interesting to see such a wide variety of songs. Many of them I don't know at all.
I'm going to make a point of finding and listening to everyone's favorites in my ongoing search for new, great music. I hope more people list their favorites. Thanks y'all.

There could lie the difference. I as a host do not feel I am the entertainer. I am a facilitator (I think that's the word i'm looking for). I am providing the service, the singers themselves are the entertainers IMO. Some nights and singers will be better than others. I am there to make sure the singers are up in some kind of an orderly fashion (again that could be debated to death), make sure they sound as good as they can. I am not there to tell jokes, or sing (when unnecessary when it's real busy) unless it's a special request, but when that happens I no longer am the host, I am singing, thus the entertainer as part of the crowd - not just me.
