Is there a legal way for someone to buy a huge karaoke collection and get started quickly?

A friend just asked me for advice about building a karaoke system for his home. He found what looks like an obviously illegal hard drive for sale with a bazillion songs on it and is asking me for advice... I'm sure he doesn't have the patience to buy and rip CDG's, but I'm not sure if there's any convenient legal alternative...

Can you still get the JB-199 or something similar and is it somewhat maybe more legal than stealing music?

The hard drive he is looking at I can already tell is illegal if it has that many songs.

http://www.acekaraoke.com/hdplayer.html

Here are a couple decent hard drive based player that you can buy preloaded & add extra options.

Just what is a bazillion songs. After looking at the site that Lonman posted the hard drive they are selling has 1300 preloaded songs and the super bundle pack has 4,500. I know KJ's here that don't have that many listed in their books now.

I'd pick up the chartbuster essential sets. 30 discs containing 450 song, they run about 160 new plus shipping or with a little patience you can cherry pick them off ebay for around 100 bucks. I believe there are 8 sets now The fist set is great I'd start with that.

Just start buyin CDG sets and stay away from the pre-loaded hard-drives.

Take the advice on the collections to get from the people here. Most will recommend the Soundchoice bricks and foundation sets.

The SGB set is a good starter--lots of bang for little bucks.

Backstage would be good to look at too---lots of bang for little bucks.

Then just shop around for best bargains on EBAY or clearance tables on the various Karaoke supply websites.

big time secons on the Ebay bit. You can find WHOLE collections from secondary manus that will fill in many a whole in major collections. The All Hits labels, Dangerous, etc...

plus you can get some deals from others that are on many discs together! From individuals to people that are sponsors here... trying to sell more to the masses!

Hey y'all! Thanks for the answers!

Lonnie - thanks - that's just what I was looking for - something I can recommend to my friend as an alternative to an illegal hard drive - easy to use, easy to set up, lots of songs, looks like it would be a reasonably high quality machine, etc.

I don't know if he'll go for it, but at least I have something better to recommend to him than "spend the next 6 months of your life ripping CDG's"... (Yeah, right... only us KJ's are crazy enough to do that - I wouldn't wish that on any of my friends... ;)

A couple other details - what I meant by "a bazillion songs" was "so many that it's obviously illegal" - I think it was over 100,000...

Can someone give me an idea of what the Chartbuster Essential sets are like - I mean are they like the Sound Choice Foundation I & II, or more like the bricks - do they each have a different focus or what? I'd appreciate an answer on that!

Also, Lonnie, I'm really curious about those collections offered on the Ace Karaoke site with the hard drive you recommended - it looks like all the manufacturers that went out of business - Sweet Georgia Brown, Music Maestro, All Hits, Backstage, Supercore - what's the legal status of those collections - how can they still be sold?

Chartbuster Essential Volumes 1 thru 6 (SCDG format) are pretty much the foundation of my library. These will only play on a CAVS player. I have checked out volumes 7 & 8, and until they come down in price, last I seen was around $189 each, I’m not going to get them. There would be a lot of dupes to what I already have, so they aren’t really cost efficient at this time

For $39 you can get them converted to mp3+G by going to www.kjamp.com and buying their convertor.

For his home ..tell him to just but the hardrive and don't worry about it!! lol

There are no LEGAL and EASY ways to do anything ..... If you want to go legal it takes CASH and Time to rip your cdgs if you want to be computer based.
Otherwise you can buy cavs type machines but it still costs you some bucks...

What's with all the legal worries ...It's been a long time sionce we had a good DISCUSSION on pirates and copies and illegal drives ..COME ON ..

Let's Get It Started In Here !!!!!!

Thanks Jam! A sense of humor is much appreciated... :P

My friend does have cash, but not time or patience...

The CAVS machine would probably be perfect for him (or at least for me to recommend, since I care about the legal aspect, whether or not he does), except they don't seem to offer them loaded with songs anymore! Am I missing something?

Tell him to buy the discs and a external hard drive and send them to me with lots of cash. I will rip them for him and send it all back.

Lots of time and patience
