Ok,
Shortly I'll be starting to rip my cdg's and cd's to my 320 G hd and I have a question but I want to avoid the whole mp3 quality argument. Assume that I can't tell the difference with an mp3 ripped at a very high rate.
How much space will I save going mp3 ripping a 2000 song library at a high quality rate? Is it worth it to rip to mp3 at 190 or greater for space savings? I'll also be ripping my audio cd's to this same drive.
Thanks,
Ken

You may count 5-7 MB per file on average at 192. So it will be 14 GB for 2000 songs. As you can see there is no point in saving on bitrate. Go for 192 or 256 kbps.

I have just shy over 15,000 songs ripped at 192 (kma) that take up about 100gb.

Your 320gb drive should have enough space for 5500++ songs ripped as .wav files.

Ok, so it looks like storage wise I'll be fine, thanks for clearing that up. The hd is now reformatted, do you guys use any kind of folder structure? Should I rip straight to the drive, rip into a karaoke folder and a dj folder? By manu? Sorry for all of the questions but I really want to do this as right as I can the first time.
Thanks,
Ken

I keep it as simple as possible. The more folder you have, the more chance of stuff getting moved or hidden by accident - that's my take on it. Everything on my drive is in the main directory, no separate sub folders. But then the kma is also 1 file. If you are running an mp3g system, you need 2 indvidual files - these can be zipped to 1 file, so you might want to create an individual folder for each song......Don't really think there is a right or wrong way really.

When I ripped my discs I used one folder for each disc and labeled them based on the disc. As an example, Super Core disc 20, the folder was labeled SPC-20. For searching and book purposes it makes it easy to find songs because it would be listed as SPC-20 Track 4 or Track 5, etc. It may not be the best way to do it, but this way each disc has it's own folder. All of the folders are in a main folder on the desktop called Ripped Karaoke, that makes everything easy to find. If you have 200 discs then you'll have 200 folders inside the "Ripped Karaoke" folder listed in alphabetical order. I don't know how well this works if you have 500 or 1,000 discs, I only have maybe 100, but some of them are SCDG that have hundreds of songs per disc. Those will be getting ripped sometime in the next few weeks. Hope this helps . . .

I too would suggest doing each disc to its' own folder. For me each of my discs were in binders which Each sot in the binder had a # on it. SO now each folder of my Karaoke songs has the same corresponding #. This way, if the PC ever crashes, I can switch back to discs with no problems.

I do it by disc#. Each disc# gets a folder.

I give each disc a folder. Then I put 20 discs into another folder. Then I put 10 of those folders into another folder and then I put all of those folders in a Brand folder. i.e. Sound Choice/SC8100-8300/SC8100-8120/SC8115/SC8115-05. If you put hundreds or even thousands of tracks into a single folder. you will be scrolling forever when you are looking for a particular song.

I think that the approach you decide upon should parallel how your software works and how you use that software.
For example, the two programs for hosting that I am most familiar with import tracks by folder designation. So, if you have every track in one folder, you might have "delete" and re-import the entire folder everytime you add new tracks. If you put new tracks in a separate folder you'll just need to import that new folder. Furthermore, everytime I download tracks from the internet I identify that transaction as a distinct folder, including the date of the download. That way, if I am ever asked to "prove" the legitimacy of any track I know where it comes from. In the same regard, I also keep my folders and discs by manufacturers

One thing to keep in mind is the file path name. If you keep your ripped karaoke folder in the root directory, C:\ and then have all discs in their own folder, the path name will be relatively short which takes less resources and computing power for windows and the hosting program. Shorter path names are better. Folders within folders within folders is not a good thing.

Or if your program has a good search feature, you just type the name or song number you want with no scrolling at all.

I put everything in one large folder like Lonman but I do not use kma I rip mine as mp3 and cdg thus having two files. On the drive they list out one on top of the other
ex:
song title - artist - manu.cdg
song title - artist - manu.mp3
I don't ever have to do any scrolling as Bruce said as I just have to type the name of the song and it comes up.
I think everyone has different ways of doing it

Since I'm using a player I originally put each disc in it's own folder when I went through this process last winter. That way I could easily find tracks just the way I could when I worked with the CDGs. I gave each manu in a folder in a master karaoke folder with each disc's folder inside that.
But some of these disc folders held as few as six tracks. So now I'm in the process of combining folders to make my manual searches faster with less scrolling. Two or three discs per folder.
If I could do it all over again that's the way I would have done it originally. Just something to think about if you aren't using a hosting program.

I would think it would be just as easy to have all the songs in one folder then use the Windows search bar to type the song & drag & drop into your player if you aren't using a program with the search feature? May be wrong on that.

for myself, since I had SO many discs, it paid to have a folder for each manufacturer, and then a folder for each disc. For bigger collections like SC, or the dreaded SGB, I would put ten discs in a grouping folder.
HOWEVER, for a singing collection, I had my own folder, and my songs i sang copied into that! ! I was doing as LoneWolf talked about, because I didn't want to go finding the discs for the ones I sang on a continuous basis.
So I have the best worlds! BOTH ways work for me!

When I tried it that way at the start I found I could do it much faster manually. So I kept ripping into CDG folders. And I have a pretty fast computer.
What are you using for search Lonnie? You're just using the player functions of your hosting program aren't you?

Yeah Hoster has a search feature, I just keep my search window open all the time, I still use numbers as if I were using discs so all I do is type in the number, or song title & enter into the playlist.
