The only safe haven left is US treasurys and they too are hanging by a thread.
Folks, I hope you are paying attention and preparing for the upcoming depression.
You are fixing to see 2 digit inflation and snowballing unemployment. Get ready for a new lifestyle.

keith your country may have the worst hurricanes but let me let you into a likkle secret...the downturn in the economy is GLOBAL!!
Real estate here has dropped 100,000 in 6 months
6 or 8 financial institutions have closed, gone into liquidation or simply frozen funds for the foreseeable future
I would dearly love to give up work or at least go part time but it would be a counter productive move in the economic climate. Having said that we are 3 adults all working and living in a freehold home so it would have to be pretty horrendous for us to suffer too harshly.
We fully expect a downturn in the number of gigs coming through as luxury things like parties and entertainment are the first things to go as belts are tightened

Oddly enough, the UK had a little relief last month, and it got a touch better. But yes the overall global trend is downwards.
That said, American is a f'n mess right now financially - Bush buggered up the good that Clinton did.
And the global depression is at least partly a result of this.

I hate to say it Keith, but I couldn't agree more. The writing has been on the wall for some time, and is getting clearer every day...Ron

I Completely Do Not Agree!
Sure, things may appear a bit bleak currently - but everything turns around -
Also, believe it or not a positive attitude does help!

From my point of view, when things get bleak, you need to get out and forget your troubles for a while--just like everyone loved the movies during the Great Depression. A local karaoke place is close to get to, gas-wise, and you can get your social fix and sing--and even make contacts where people tell you about cheaper deals or make trades--helping each other out, so to speak. Last week I cut down the groceries to bare necessities and improvised on meals so that we would still have the money to go to karaoke. Wonder if any one else will do the same.

Hmmm, that alone could boost the ecomomy -
Okay so everyone drink more beer!
{In order to drink more beer one must buy more beer, this in turn causes the brewer to create more beer which means more jobs. More jobs means more income thrown into the economy!}

It's a good time to buy. Those who rely on dividend returns and need money short-term are in trouble however. If people can't just let the principle they invest sit longer term, but instead rely on dividend interest to live off've waiting out the roller-coastering of the market they are in trouble, it's no get rich quick scheme for those that need quick money.. If you can just sit and wait it out let the principle sit for a LONG time in money markets (and some of us have been waiting a LONG time) things come around. The stock market is bad if you rely on the returns short term. But it's been this way for a LONG time. Nothing new !
So I'm somewhere in between on this.. Good time to buy, bad time to withdraw !
When things are bad, it's a good time to buy... Assuming you are living hand to mouth stock market is NOT a good idea.
OK, back to my touring !

and more drinking means you can't spend as much on Gas because you need to stay home so you conserve gasoline, but even assuming you drive (well, not sure if DUI tickets and court fees help support the economy). Actually real middle-aged men quit working and move back in with their parents. Keeps expenses down, heck, it's not our fault that we were born !
Economics 101- The key to increasing disposable income and cutting expenses is
decreasing ones standards. If you wish to be happy and
successful in todays world you must in turn have VERY low
standards !
btw, McDonalds stocks are doing just fine !

A recession is two quarters of negative growth, I don't think we've had that yet. We've been through this before and came out OK. I am sure those who lived through the great depression thought it was the end (and many did) , but of course we see that it did turn around. Same situation today. Nlouch, neither Clinton or Bush has or had any control over the economy in a big way like everyone thinks. Truth be known, the economy was starting to turn around before Clinton and Bush the first during the latter Reagan years. Even then, it had it's ups and downs, but nothing as bad as during Carter and Ford. If the value of my stocks in my mutual funds are less in value for a term, while I still contribute the same amount out of my check, am I not buying more stock at a better price? What happens to that stock when the market goes bull again?

Lordy I am hoping that theory is solid as my super annuation fund is with a finance institution offering a slightly higher rate of return...thing is they are one of the companys who have frozen trading so I stand to lose some money...

I dunno Kappy. I thought it was a buyers market last week, but my favorite funds keep dropping 2-3-4 percent per day......I'm itching to get back in but can't predict the bottom.....I've been sitting it out in treasurys 18 months at a measely 5% watching the broad market continue to decline 15-25% in the same period.
Late today the Fed bailed out AIG with another 85 billion. They only did that to prevent a REAL global crisis......Just another finger in the dike?
Guru, I'm all about confidence, but I know the difference between wishful thinking and cold hard facts.

I agree with this.
Inexpensive entertainment may be recession-proof. People love karaoke, and few can afford to have it at home, and people need a release from the stress of life.
Karaoke hosts may not suffer as most other forms of business.

I’m feeling the effects of what’s happening in my area, as well.
In fact, I may lose my job (Career Tech teacher), as my school is closing programs, and seeing as I teach the more problemed kids, my numbers tend to be low as they get jailed, drop out, don’t care, etc.
If I do, I’m going to school for nursing, in which case I intend on focusing back on doing karaoke gigs as supplemental income.
Wish me luck.

I didn't read all the posts leading up to this, but did you guys see how AIG's stock tripled yesterday. If you keep your eye on the ball there are places to make money in the stock market, but it is risky.

Babs, AIG just got OWNED by the US government......It's called Nationalization.....Nationalization is something that happens in places like (former) Burma, but never in America where privatization has been King......until now.
AIG's solvency is of GLOBAL economic importance. It operates in 130 countries. AIG is a major world INSURER. Insurers like AIG guarantee public/private assets in hard form. If AIG were to fail, then large portions of the global economy would also fail because no one wants in invest in anything that ain't insured.
Trust me.....This is not good.
Plan for lots of inflation and lots less credit available. Plan for very high unemployment and folks with little or no bucks left for entertainment.....Pay off any unsecured debts and attempt to "OWN" your home.....Forget your home equity, as it is evaporating faster than a wet fart in a hard wind.
