Well not wanting to sound like a broken record, but you do not really want to use home stereo equipment - especially speakers - for live vocals, which karaoke is. You have a much higher risk of blowing them out & chances are you will not be happy with the sound which will make you eq them differently which also will heighten the chance of blowing them.
If this is a risk you are willing to take, then with that budget you should be fine!

Yes they will work Get an old stereo amp about 125 watts. I still got a Sony TA-SA411 sitting in the closet and its had many hours doing karaoke.

But if you are a nut like me, and it appears that you have found a new hobby for a long time to come, purchase better equipment to begin with. It will end up saving you money. Also, if you buy stuff that has good resale value you can recoup quite a bit on EBay when the time comes. I have started selling off some of the stuff I accumulated in my search for the perfect setup.

Hi all, I'm looking for a home system for my family to use. I have some questions which are prob very simple but I couldn't find the answers. Hopefully you guys can help. Basically I am looking for a pretty simple system. I saw the Cavs 203G on ebay and it seems to comes with all the stuff and a ton of songs for under $300. Which is just my budget. Now i'm wondering, can I just hook it up to my receiver and use my infinity Floor standing speakers) as the speakers. Do I need specific style speakers? Also, is there anything I should look out for with my first purchase? I read a few post on the quality of the mics is important. The auction I saw comes with two Cavs mics, not sure if they are any good.

I had to give this same advice to a good friend of my lady. She's been singing on her home system, and you can distictly hear the buzz of speakers that are starting to go flaky. I hooked up my speakers to her system and she immediately loved them. These were tiny 5" replicas of the larger 12" ones I have. Woofers that are BUILT for live mic spikes work best!

I ran karaoke through my Bose 301 speakers for quite a long time before they were damaged.

Now if you ask me if I would trade such a system for my PA, the answer is no. When I sing through my living-room practice system nowadays, I am very disappointed with the sound. I have gotten used to the real live-sound mixer and the power/headroom of a real PA speakers and amp. Not to mention the equalization, monitor speakers, etc. But for starting out it is OK. I know that, because that is how I started out. And if you don't have the bug like I do, it may be enough forever. So you aren't out the money. But if you are a nut like me, and it appears that you have found a new hobby for a long time to come, purchase better equipment to begin with. It will end up saving you money. Also, if you buy stuff that has good resale value you can recoup quite a bit on EBay when the time comes. I think I have one or three of those (pre-amps) in the back of my storage closet as well. I used to buy and sell auctioned items and I bought a load of electronic PA system equipment, speakers, pre-Amps, used mics and etc. a few years back and have some of the equipment still sitting around. I'll go out to my storage room and have a look see after I get back from my VA doc visit later today. Thanks Ollie.

Like a lot of other people I suppose this thing called Karaoke was a slow to evolve process and now I'm hooked on it and need a fix on a regular basis. I currently have about 7k+ songs (and still growing) all on discs that I have purchased in stores, on eBay, internet stores and other (legal) places. My system as a result evolved slowly and it is currently a hodge-podge I suppose but I hope to be able to gradually upgrade to a better system with time and money of course. I started that process with my purchase of the CAVs 203g system minus the hard drive. But hurricane Ike has dealt me a financial set back and I hope to get back on track on upgrading in about a month or so.

If they have been sitting around for years and not powered put a 25-50 watt light bulb in series with the power cord. Let it sit there at half power for a few hours. This doesnt hit the caps and other things with a full surge of power.

This is strictly for a in-home set up. I too have the 203g system. I would use a set like that over your main home theater speakers, at least so you can hear. These still are not designed for live vocals however. But probably wouldn't matter as much if you blow them out. Most receivers have an A/B speaker set, if yours does, hook the extra set to B & switch to those only when doing karaoke.

If I am strictly home use, occasional entertainment, can I get some reg speakers that I don't mind damaging, hook up a player like the Cavs 203 through my receiver and enjoy karaoke?

I am sure they are better, but I think they want 300 watts. (Correct me if I am wrong.) The nice thing about the TP112 is that they only take 125W, and sound good -- and loud -- at that power level.
