Tonight we went to meet with a Bar manager at a new venue. This is a place where they had karaoke in the past, but far away enough that I was never there. The former host has not contacted them about this year, she had forgotten his name and lost his card. SO she started calling people who advertise in the local bar newspaper. I returned her call promptly (half hour) and left her a message back. we talked later that night and Booked Halloween for my host there on the initial phone call at a pretty good rate.
I always like to co Check out A new bar and meet with the manager ect so we Made an appointment to meet her tonight. The bar is not big by any means, But it has charm and it IS clean, so I like it. I always ask how a new customer found out about me, and it is usually this newspaper so that was no big shock. then She told Me She had called SEVEN different shows in the paper. I was the quickest to reply and gave a The fairest price for an upscale show, Talked to her with respect and cared about HER concerns when we spoke. Two of the people she called still have not even called her back a week later!! Are there THAT many people out there who are so ignorant as to not return a potential clients call, respond rudely , or think they can highball somebody just cause they call you? By the time we left tonight we had booked FIVE MORE shows!, monthly through late spring. in this economy Im astounded that people don't Bother to serve there customers. are these people everywhere?
I post this mostly as a reminder that the basics you learned in elementary school about how to treat people can have a huge impact on your Karaoke.
The other thing that some here may laugh at. the bar is called Olie's tap.

super,
I agree with you, it has always amazed me how when you call someone for something and the don't ever call you back. When someone calls me about my business, I make every effort to call them back asap....even if there is no way I can help them out. It's just the way it should be done, I believe. With a name like "Olie's Tap"...it has to be good! Best of luck to you or your host in the new place...MrD

Since the name didn't show on the phone, maybe they thought, it's a call about their outstanding bills, which they MUST have with those business practices...

Obviously they didn't call back because they didn't want the job. Or maybe they're completely out of the business. Which is good for you. But as Delicious said it's good to have the courtesy to return a call like that and tell them you can't do it.

I meet with a bar owner the other day and discussed starting a regular Saturday Gig. I'll discuss that later ..but he was telling me that he has a NICE regular Karaoke Crowd that comes in but he had a falling out with the KJ who has been working there for awhile. Owners complaints about that KJ and the few he interviewed before me.
#1) Original KJ refused to play some upbeat filler when requested byu OWNER
#2) Original KJ demanded 3 regulars be banned and gave an ultimatum ( you know who won)
One potential KJ came in for a show and was offered FREE DINNER by the owner
sent it back telling the owner his FRENCH FRYS SUCKED ...can you imagine ?

You know, I think some people KJs and DJs) are there behind their rigs, and get a God complex.
I am polite, I turn up early, I check a venue before hand, I ask if there are considerations, and if the owner prefers, I run "self-contained" - not needing any input from the owner.
Some people seem to think you do it by their rules or you don't do it.
All power to them, but that way is not for me!

What amazes me about the non call backs is why would you spend money to advertise if you didn't need the gigs. What a waste of money !
Kudos for your professionalism Supercharged !

Even if I think "I cant do that show" I do the call back and try to make something work. When she first called I did not think I could do it as I needed my host to run my show being that my sister in law has chosen that as her wedding day (dumbazz) After talking to My wife and my host, and a fill in that we sometimes use I found that I could srtup ahead of time, the filler will start the show and Ill probably make it by 10:00 or so. I did so thinking 1, good paying show. 2, possible return bookings. I was right on both counts, some times it pays to "think outside the box". Wife is not happy that I have put a timeline on her sisters wedding, BUT she would be happy to spend the extra money that I will make on the shows. funny how those things work isn't it?

As to whether it is a compliment or not, it is. You must remember Pohl's Law:

You should be happy your customer service is in the 10%.

I know where Delefield is, but this Cooney you speak of has me confused. I used to have a weekly cruise night at the Hardees in Delefield until they bought their own cheap PA and played their own music (grumble grumble)
