I just finished with an install of PC-BSD, and it's a true Unix distro, (Not Linux) and it is wonderful.

Try it out..

Yes.

Download the first three iso files, and it will install on three CDs..

512 ram or better, invida video is preferred, but most work..

I used a Dell 2.66 4600C desktop..

GUI setup is smooth..

Finally gotem thats about 2MB download.. I have a 80 GB for the laptop (original) I will install on.

Does Wine Config or Codeweaver work with this? I need to get RoxBox on it. Is there a forum for it? You are welcome to put some tutorials on mine.

For those not familiar with Linux or Unix operating systems they are very efficient and are easily structured for your needs. Many professional recording studios are shifting to these OS for DAW'S (digital audio work stations) for they do not have all the processeses running in the background and do not need a super high speed expensive computer. There are many DJ'S converting and it is the future OS for our business.

Pay for Vista and fight it or start using a free OS that runs circles around any Windoze. Unix is the most stable OS there is...

This is just one example I use Sonar and paid big bucks for it. This is free being constantly updated by many nix writers ardour

I believe ya Ollie...thing is I would have to live next door to you or JD before I installed it...cos I would need constant tuition...Once I am up n running with something I am ok but my knowledge of puters doesnt really stretch to doing much. I installed my last dvd drive and ram etc but thats about the strength of my abilities

Viki initially it is a wee bit intimidating. But after installation you have a desktop and all your usual icons. It can be used by a nontech type or with a little bit of knowledge gives you total control over your computer. Viruses online are rare. The sound engines blow away any windoze apps.

18,000 programs will run.. PC BSD is based on FreeBSD, and the hardware requirements are the same. (Maybe a little extra memory won't hurt..

Here is the root web page. http://www.pcbsd.org/

Here is FreeBSD http://www.freebsd.org/

Enjoy..
