hey yall, new here so forgive if i look dumb. I have about 33,000 songs on cd and i want to put them on my new lap top. I am not very computer savie and don't know all the terms. What software should i get and how do i get it? Also...Can I come back here when i run into problems as I am sure I will?

For home or pro use? There are several different softwares out there you can run a show on. You will need a ripper of some kind (sometimes included in the hosting software) and a cdg compatible cd/dvd drive.

Many have demos, download & check them out.
Here are a couple of programs you can look at, although there are several more.

http://www.mtu.com/basics/karaoke-hoster.htm - this one has a built in ripper that is compatible with more drives than others.

http://www.kjtools.com/CompuHost.html - lots of flashy goodies, their ripper isn't as compatible with as many drives.

Unless you are going with Hoster, the best ripping program out there is Powerkaraoke's CDG Burner.
Lonman is correct on the players that support professional use.
Personally I use CompuHost but I chose to stick with the ORIGINAL PC karaoke format for converting CD+G's to MP3+G's.

I also use CompuHost and PowerKaraoke -- having tried the other top ones I find them to be the best. (I assume this is pro, because 33,000 songs worth of CDGs is an awful lot for an amateur.)

I also like Danny recommend ripping to MP3+G with PowerKaraoke. MTU-ripped songs are only playable by their programs. (You can, just in the past year, convert them to other formats.) If you do choose MTU Hoster, you can easily import MP3+G songs to their format.

As long as they are not zipped is my understanding. Heard something about them taking the import from zipped out of the import feature. Unless they have put it back in.

I am undergoing the same transformation and have asked a lot of questions here and they have all been answered very well, even the dumb ones! It came down to Hoster and Compuhost(along with Powerkaraoke's cdg ripper) for me and I would highly suggest downloading the associated demo programs before making the purchasing decision. I will be going the Compuhost route here soon, I just liked the features better.

I would also suggest making a lot of time available to rip your cdg's to hard drive. Even longer if you need to rip your audio cd's as well. I haven't actually timed it but I'd guess in the neighborhood of 15 minutes a disk, you do the math.

Make sure your laptop has s video out. If it does not, you'll need a vga converter. For audio depending on your sound card you might get by with a headphone to rca splitter but you might be better off with a usb audio converter as well.

Hmm. I didn't pay for the latest Hoster upgrade and don't have 4.x, so I don't know anymore. It would surprise me -- except with MTU, it wouldn't. I am definitely not their fanboy.
