What is the difference between Beta microphone & a regular mic,(SM 58 & SM 58 Beta for as an example)? I know the Beta's are more expensive, but why? Just curious. |

Mainly the Beta has a tighter pickup pattern for better feedback rejection. It's also got a better frequency response & shock resistance over the standard SM. The only drawback with this for karaoke is that "most" karaoke singers don't have mic control. With the tight pattern, the singer needs to hold the mic straight on - which is what they should be doing anyway, but if you notice alot of karaoke singers sometimes hold the mic off to the side or up in the air like they see on the video or other crazy ways. A wider pickup pattern will be more forgiving & can pick that type of singing up a little more, but again the wider the pickup pattern, the greater chance for feedback. |
