I work two venues. At the one, I have no buzz at all. The other venue, where I'm usally located no matter what I try, I get this hum/buzz and it gets louder as I turn up the volume. The last of my tests was to move my system to the other side of the bar, and I didn't get the hum over there. The owner just put in a new pair of speakers with wire that runs along the top of the wall. He just moved the big screen (projector) behind where I set up, and there's also a motion detector for his security system up in the corner where I set up. Any suggestions? Are there filters I can employ, or other things I can check. It's not independent to one speaker it's on both. Thanks. Croak |

sounds like a bad ground on the electrical connection. Or is the video on the TV up? That will cause the hum sometimes. Folks on here LOVE the ground loop isolator from Rat Shack for difficult hums! |

Disconnect the satellite or cable from the TVs you are connected to. That nails it most of the time I have seen this problem... |

Yep, them darned antennaes! ANY sort of signal the tv receives can translate to a noise of some type. |

Is it hum or a buzz? I think it makes a difference between the two. The constant hum that is around 60Hz is most likely due to the isolated ground problem. If you are getting a buzz, which is like a hum but you hear a definitely cycle on sound, it probably is a RF interference. You need to understand the sound before you can diagnose the problem. |

The owner has a do dad that he inserted into all his plugs to check for grounding and they all checked out. I was still getting the buzz even when I disconnected the video. I'll see what kind of feeds he uses, I think it's just comcast. He has WiFi ... but says it's off during karaoke. It's just that one side of the room. He has a S-Video cable plugged in to a tuner that runs up the ceiling to the projector and has an RCA video link that just dangles there. I've tried them both and get the same effect. What does a ground loop isolator do exactly? |

A ground loop if I remember is when two ground circuits are at different potentials. They should be the same. You can measure the ground connections with an ohmeter and see if there is resistance. Be careful not to touch either live or neutral. If the resistance is significant then there may be a problem. It could be a phase difference or some equipment loading the ac circuit. |

Croak I had exactly the same thing happen at the restaurant I played in every month. It didnt matter what I tried it always had a hum. I thought it was the light dimmer switch that is always noisy and it was affecting my equip. Till someone suggested that I run everything back to the one power source. He suggested I run all my powered speakers, my mixer, my puter my cordless mic, my powered monitor all through the one power plug via multiboards. Now my speakers are actually a long way away from where my mixer etc is so it meant I had to run extension cords and do a lot of taping down before it was safe for restaurant patrons to walk or (heaven forbid to dance) but yanno it worked...I have never had interferance since |

All of the above are good suggestions. I would also, at some point, find a way to skip the house system. You have know Idea how they wired it, and if it's appropriate. You should really run you own. Another suggestion, if the others don't work: If you have a wired mic, unplug it. If this solves the problem, the mic or cable is either bad, or acting as an antennae to pick up transients like neon lighting, etc... |

Yeah, when I look at what I did on the weekend, I have to say I'm a fine one to talk in that respect! Now have the 42" widescreen, Satellite PVR, home theatre system, Blu-Ray, wireless video, and Wii all fed from the one outlet. At least I'm not getting buzzing on that!
