Okay, as many know, I'm new to this and trying to figure a few things out. So, I'm intending to go the digital route with computer hosting software, three or so microphones, an additional CDG player just in case, and speakers that already have the amp.
Based on what I see, everything is controlled by the computer software, re: key changes, volume adjustments, etc....right? So, do I need a mixer board? If so, please explain why. Again, I'm really new to this and trying to make sure I understand things fully.
Thanks

Absolutely you need one. Where would you plug in your mics? And equalize them? What would you use for effects? Or compression? How would you route a signal to and control a monitor speaker if you had one? What would you use to provide line-level output to the powered speakers?
You need it for many reasons.

Got it, thanks a lot! These are the questions I was asking myself when I thought it was absolutely necessary. But, when chatting with a KJ last night, he was telling me how he pretty much does not use the mixer...I was thinking, "huh, am I missing something?"
Thanks so much; this has been boggling my mind all day!

I have a mixer, but don't use it, as I've not had large rooms to play in. I just use my mixer/amp, and that has my microphone settings.
I wonder if the KJ has the same thing.
Be WARY of the kjs that hook into the karaoke PLAYER that has mic inputs... talk about a nightmare!

Okay, maybe he meant what you are saying. Based on recommendation here, I'm considering the: MG124CX Yamaha. When I chatted with the KJ last night about his mixer board, I noticed things were plugged in, but, he was saying he pretty much doesn't use it.
I think that's the thing...so, you pretty much plug it in, adjust the mics as necessary, and use your software for the rest? BTW, is the Yamaha I am considering powerful enough to power the speakers without me worrying about getting speakers w/their own amps, or, shall I proceed to purchase the mixer and speakers with amps?

powered speakers have their own amps.
Non-powered speakers use a regular amp.
If you have a mixer, it's entirely possible to use it to drive the mics and the volume of the audio. That mixer looks pretty darned nice!

Thanks so much; I really appreciate all your information! I'm new to the concept of using KJ/DJ equipment, but, learn very quickly, and the connection of everything makes sense to me.
So, now, I just need to buy this stuff, learn how to work it, and do some gigs!

The one you mention -- which is the one I use -- is not a powered mixer. So you need powered speakers with it (or an amp).
It is a great karaoke mixer because of it's built-in one-knob compression. Set that about mid-range and it makes a big difference in the way singers sound.
