I had a guy come up on stage Saturday and whisper to me " You and me later baby cakes". So I started out thinking Yuck ! The shock on my face obviously went over his head. Anyway there is a packed house of people, I start the music and he picks up the mic and screams at the top of his lungs "Yippy Kiyeah you d_m mother f_ckers ". The audience's faces looked liked they'd been hit with an atom bomb, cringing in shock. I turn his mic off, stop the music and announce he's done. I didn't even look at him and called up the next person. He is in amazement thinking this girls got balls, I'm the (@$%!). The next singer is a very large man that is a regular and takes the mic from him. I got lucky there. I told his girlfriend (yeah he had a gf ) I don't tolerate screaming or swearing on the mic that I understand he didn't mean any harm, but he can't sing any more tonight. If he is so drunk that he doesn't know how wrong that was he doesn't need to be singing. Usually if someone breaks the rules I'll give a warning first. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt in case they are new and don't know the rules. My intent is not to embarrass someone, but this guy was so over the top I had to do something immediately. The best part of this is it worked to my advantage. Later in the rotation I had a young guy come up to sing a song that had the word "sh!t" in the song a few times. He is very respectful to me telling me he is sorry I probably won't like the song. I told him it's fine if the word is in the song, that's different and I explained what the rules were the previous guy broke. It just tickled me because the appearance of this fellow was very hard core. Enforcing the rules I find earns you respect. Now I'm no hitler by any means. I'm just pointing out I've learned trying to be the nice guy all the time gets you walked on. A little tough love once in a while earns you respect. Especially if the regular coming up to sing next is 6'7" . |

Babs you did everything right. Kudos. If you really wanted to be a b, you could have told his girlfriend what he whispered to you. |

Okay - I'm blushing. Thank you all. It's hard to know sometimes if you're doing the right thing especially when some times things happen so quickly. So many different personalities and people under the influence of alcohol can make the smallest situation turn bad. I just got lucky this guy didn't turn on me, but I feel it's my job to try and keep things under control the best way I know how. I may not always get it right, but I try. Being a part of this forum has given me great insite into how to handle people. So really the kudos go to you guys. |

Way to go Babs! Being a rather smallish guy I wouldn't have been as bold. Without the doorman next to me that is. |

Very impressive Babs. I like the part where you didn't look at him and just called up the next singer. |

Sheesh you shut the Mic off on me in the show last weekend and had a big guy take the mic from me. Now you tell everyone about it here. I learned my lesson sheesh... There is nothing worse then hearing someone scream into the mic both as a KJ or the audience and I never understand why people have to do it and profanity makes it even worse. Good Job!! |

As long as we are still on the topic of screaming and profanity I thought I'd share another story. I have a regular who has been around for about 5 yrs with me. Everyone likes him and he's always been sweet to me. He started making a habit of talking in a loud voice (not a scream) over the mic when the music started. He would tend to use the "F" word or some profanity to say what he said. I knew he meant no harm and just simply would forget it isn't appropraite and I don't allow it. I would make a joke to try and get my point across without embarrassing him. Something like he said Fudge I know he did. He would apolgize and we'd all laugh. People forget sometimes because they use it in every day talk. I know that, so I'll give a warning first. Well it continued. I had to do something. I can't allow some people to do it and not others. My solution was to keep his mic off until the exact moment he was to sing. He was so in shock when he tried to talk and there was no sound. I explained after that -everytime you come up to sing you swear in the mic, so I decided to keep it turned off. He was so sad looking when I told him. The next time he came up to sing I forgot to turn off the mic. It isn't my norm to do so, so it slipped my mind. He started talking in the mic and when he realized it was on he said, Hey this thing actually works when you don't swear in it, that's cool Babs. I haven't had a problem since. |
