Diafel post got me thinking. How many of you actually announce to people you should tip the staff? I didn't want to highjack her thread, so I thought I'd post a poll.

I rarely if ever announce you should tip your staff. I like others said in the other post feel silly reminding people of something they already know. Now if it's their birthday I make an announcement and encourage them to take care of them, but that's about it.

I'm not saying it's a wrong thing to do. The hosts that do are only trying to put forth a nice gesture. :D

I was surprised to hear others felt like I did.

I voted once or twice a night. Usually within the first and the last hour. I know, it's silly since most people should know that anyway, but I always remind them, how hard they worked for the guests and that they really mostly work for tips.

I just usually say something like "Remember your waitress and bartender, take care of them and they will take care of you."

I have found that if I tip a bartender well, they will remember me and my drinks seem a little stronger. :D

I announce at least once an hour in a 4 hour night - sometimes more if it's a really busy night or if they are shorthanded. I see it as the staff is a big part of people deciding to stay or go. If the staff are making a little extra, they will more likely have a better attitude for the night making peoples experience on the floor a little better maybe pushing their decision to stay a little longer, finish another drink (or food) and wait though a longer rotation for another song.

And you would be surprised how many 'forget' to tip. The staff has told me their tips actually increase shortly after I make the announcement. They will level off during the in between until the next announcement.

When I am at a venue for awhile I am part of the team with staff. We are on the same page. Some dont want the announcement but I wont make a canned announcement to tip anybody. I will acknowledge them and sort of intro them to a new crowd. We are not formal but are there to party and have fun. BTW our staff gets tipped very well.

I seldom do. And that is because when I was on the other side I never appreciated pitches like that from the KJ and felt a bit of separation between the KJ and singers afterwards. Disagree with me if you wish, but I believe that singers like to think of their KJ as just one of them who happens to have a hosting job.

The staff makes plenty of tips anyway without it. There used to be fights as to who would get to work on karaoke nights until the manager decided he would with his friend.

Yeah, I suppose people can forget to tip...I forget to announce to not to forget to tip your bartender and waitress's sometimes. I generally try to make the announcement a few times a night. It can't hurt...MrD

We announce it at the top of the rotation assuming it has been 45 minutes or so. We also make other announcements about upcoming events, special occasions, etc. Plus I have one of our promo trailers on CompuHost that says something about taking care of the wait staff.

So I guess that means several. 8-)

I might as well insert one last post regarding tipping on this thread!

I wonder, regarding establishments where the entertainment announces that the partrons should tip the servers, what do the servers do for tips on nights when there is no entertainment, therefore, no "tipping" announcement?

Can't say in my current club as we have entertainment 7 nights. But 1 club that I worked that did not have entertainment on certain nights also did not have a waitress scheduled on those nights. Just the bartender with a big tip jar behind him & a small basketball hoop with backboard built over it. Customers would try to 'dunk' the tip into the jar from over the counter so in effect it was a 'tipping announcement' as he would walk out with a pretty good chunk at the end of the night.

So... I guess we agree that when there is no entertainment or maybe just Texas Hold 'em or darts, no announcements are made about tipping and the servers survive? And, of course, waitresses can't carry around backboards!
